UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Nnsron FRERE, on LONDON, COUNTY or MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND.
COMBINATION WATCH-CHAIN'AND PEN AND PE NCIL HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,804, dated August 9,1887.
Application filed January 27, 1886. Serial No. 180,897. (No model.) Patented in France October 27, 1885, No, 171,908; in England December 9, 1885, No. 15,142, and in Germany December 28, 1885, No. 36,575.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NESTOR FRERE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at No. 13 Upper \Vestbourne Terrace, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, engineer, have invented a new and useful Combination Watch-Chain and Pen and Pencil Holder, (for which Letters Patent have been granted in the following countries: Great Britain, N 0. 15,142, December 9, 1885; France, No. 171,908, October 27, 1885; andv Germany, No. 36,575, December 28, 1885,) of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to an improved combination watchguard and pen and pencilholder; and it consists in making the links of the watch-guard mutually telescopic, so that by being made to close up by sliding over or into each other the flexible and pendent guard is immediately converted into a rigid pen or pencil holder. A light chain runs through the series of telescopic links to which it is loosely connected. Each guard is furnished with a small ink-bottle, which can be conveniently produced so as to serve the purpose of a seal, the pencil or pen being preferably at the watch end of the guard. The guard is made detachable from both watch" and wearer by means of snap-hooks or other equivalent device.
I attain the object of my invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a combination watch-guard made according to my invention, detached, and closed up, thereby producing a pen-holder. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of two adjoining links closed up, and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of two adjoining links dis jointed as the links would be when my inven tion is being used as a watch-guard. Fig. 4 shows a combination-guard made as a penholder disconnected, with the pen reversed,
the ink-bottle closed, and ready for receiving the watch and to be attached to the vest.
Like letters are marked throughout the fig ures with the same reference-letter.
projections 12 b are formed upon the tubes B B, to prevent them being pushed too far into the tubes A A, as well as to add to the rigidity of the holder.
Although the figures illustrate the tubes A B as ofa. circular section, I wishit to be distinctly understood that I do not confine-myself to thissection, nor to the exact outer conformation of the tubes, inasmuch as any outline or conformation may be given to them, according to the taste or fancy of the manufacturer, provided that the ends of the smaller links are capable of sliding into the larger ones evenly, but not loosely.
O is aplain chain longer than the total number of tubes A B, which are threaded upon it, the center of a link of this chain preferably coinciding with the center of a tube, as shown in Fig. 3. A pin, 0, is passed through the center of each tube and through a link of the chain 0. The play of the tubes A and B is therefore limited and the continuity of the guard maintained. One end of the chain 0 may conveniently terminate in 'a snap-hook, D, forming a flexible and convenient connection with the bar (I or its equivalent.
E is a small ink-reservoir hanging from its cap 6, which is connected to theend of the chain or of the guard. The other end of the chain is fastened to theterminal tube A, which is preferably longer than the tubes A. It receives a reversible pen-holder, F, or a pencilholder may be substituted. The connect-ion with the watch is effected by means of a snaphook, F, or equivalent device.
I do not confine myself to fitting the terminal F with a single pen or a single pencil, inasmuch as a reversible terminal having a pen at one end and a pencil at the other may be used.
The mode of using my invention is as follows: If the wearer wishes to use the pencil only, he detaches the snap-hook F from his watch, leaving the latter in his pocket, and the closing up of as many tube-links as may be considered necessary produces a practicable pencil-holder. vWhen the wearer has finished, he separates the links bypulliug the ends of the chain 0 and re-attaches his watch. The use of the pencil does not require so many tube-links to be closed up as would be necessary to form a practicable pen-holder, inasmuch as the grip necessary to use a, pen properly cannot be conveniently gained upon a length which is quite sufficient to furnish a practicable pencil. lVhen it is required to use a pen, the watch is disconnected, the terminal F adjusted, the chain taken off the snap D, and closed up. This produces a practicable pen-holder. The ink-bottle Eis unscrewed from its cap, or the latter may be made detaehable.
I claim- 1. A watch guard consisti ng oftubes the ends of which are of different diameters, the external diameter of the ends of the smaller tubes being equal to the internal diameter of the ends of the larger, and which tubes are strung alternately upon a chain,to the links of which they are severally connected, substantially as and for the purpose described with reference to the accompanying figures.
2. In a watcl1-guard, the combination of tubes having ends of different diameters, the external diameter of a small end being equal to the internal diameter of a large end, a chain upon which all the tubes are strung alternatel y, a small end next to a large one, with transverse pins fixed diametrically in the tubes and passing through links in the chain, substantially as and for the purpose described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
3. In a watch-guard, the combination, with tubes of different diameters, of rings upon the smaller tubes at a short distance from the ends of the same, which rings are approximately of the same diameter and shape as the end of the larger tubes, against which they abut when the ends of the smaller tubes are pushed into the ends of the larger ones, substantially as and for the purpose described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
4-. The combination, with a watch guard made of tubes of different diameters, the external diameter of the ends of the smaller being equal to the internal diameter of the ad joining larger tubes strung upon a chain, to which they are severally eonnected,of a pendant with bottle and movable pen or pencil end, substantially as and for the purpose described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of January, 1886.
NESTOR FRERE.
