l WAGON. e No. 367,247. Patented July 26, 1887.

UNITED STATES 4PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE SMILEY, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN WAGON.
SPECFIC'ATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,247, dated July 26, 1887. Y Application tiled October 12, 1886. Serial No. 216,002. (No model.)
.T0 all whom it may concern: i
zen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Wagon, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinventon relates to that class of wagons which have two reaches obliquely crossing eac-h other between the axles. It has forits object certain improvements iin connection with such reaches.
In the drawings forming a partof this speciiication, Figure l'is a sideelevation with the Wagon-wheels on one side removed. Fig. 2is a plan view.V
Referring to the lettered parts of the'drawings, B B are the crossed reaches. Ihey are pivotally connected at the ends to the axles C by means of pivotal bolts b, passed through straps secured to the lends of the reaches'and 'through a lug, c, integral with oneside of the cle 0r curve, Fig. 2, but horizontally straight on top, Fig. 1, from thence downward onto the reach, and forward to the point of pivoting atb. Of course the bolsters E are held by the ordinary king-bolt, (not here shown,) so as to allow the axles to turn, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, when turning out of a straight course, during which action the bars D form asupport for the bolsters E. Only one bolster is shown in Fig. 2, one end of which is broken to show the hingiug-eye c beneath.
The advantages of having both front and rear axles turn is well understood without dwelling upon thatpoint. l
This plan of constructing a reach-coupling and bolster-support from a single strip of iron makes a strong attachment, well braced, and' safely supports the ends of the bolsters, and the hinging-eye, being integral with the skein or collar upon which the wheel revolves, makes a strong connection without weakening the axles. However, the reaches and bolstersupports may be attached by pivot direct to the axles, if preferred.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the reaches, the skeins having the hinging-lugs, and the bolstersupports secured to the forward end of the reaches and hinged to said lugs, substantially as set forth. i
2. In a Vehicle, the combination of the axles, crossed reaches, and the bolster-supports pivotally attaching the reaches to the axles, and having the4 upper curved fiat portion, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE SMILEY.
