NURSERY-GATE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,162, dated July 26, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, JOHN H. PETERSON, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursery- Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to furnish a nursery-gate which will be simple and.ineX-.

pensive, and which children cannot climb over.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of my -nursery-gate; and Fig. 2 is an end View.

A A are tubes, within each of which and projecting therefrom are placed two sliding rods, B B.

C are springs within tubes A A', the ends of which bear against the inside ends of rods B B', and which are secured at their middles D to the tubes A A.

' E are slats to which the tubes A A are secured.

E are slats secured to the rods B B'. The ends of rods B B are placed in suitable holes iu the sides of the doorway and are h eld' in place by the pressure of the springs. The dotted lines represent the doorway. The slats E are sufficiently close together to prevent a child from passing between them, and they are sufficiently high to prevent its crawling over them. f In nursery-gates as'ordinarily constructed the slats are horizontal and children can-climb up them, and they sometimes fall off and renursery-gate that may be adj usted to doors of different widths, as shown in the patent to E. A. Tuttle, dated AugustlZ, 1873; neither 4is it new to provide a tube with projecting rods which are forced outward by coiled springs within the tube, asshown inthe patent to W. E. Hammond, dated June 16,1865. I do not therefore claim either of these devices by itself. My improved gateis self-adjusting and does not require the application of any fixtures which would reduce the clear width between the door-posts to hold it in place.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a nursery gate, the combination, with the recessed door-posts, of the gate consisting of tubes A and A, sliding rods B and B', the springs C within the tubes, adapted to force said rods outward into the recesses ot the posts, the slats E, attached to the tubes, and the slats PLQ-connecting the rods near their outer ends, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
