In the accompanying drawings, Figure lv designates a partly sectional side view of a grate-bar embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Y Fig. 3 is a partly sectional side view of a grate-bar ofsomewhat modified form embodying my inlprovement. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the latter.

Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, A designates the grate-bar, which may be fiat-sided in the main, Ybut has the upper portion somewhat widened with relation to the main portion and curved convergently to acentral point or apex. The curved portion a', at one side of the upper portionof the bar, terminates in a shoulder at its lowest extremity. The other curved portion, a2, extends in a continuous curve until it reaches the dat lower portion of the bar, with the exception that in it is a groove, a3, which extends lengthwise of the bar. The bottom of the bar may be arched, for. the purpose of strengthening it.
B designates leaves, some of which have their top surface formed of central flat portions and connecting arc-shaped end portions, while others have a continuous are shape throughout. These leaves B have openings corresponding in shape to the upper curved portions, a a2, ofthe bar A, convergent] y curved to a central point. The side b of the opening of the leaves, corresponding to the curved side portion a of the bar A, has at the lower extremity an inwardly-extending portion, b, forming a fulcrum piece or pivot and adapted to t under the shoulder, which is formed at the lower extremity of the curved side portion a of the bar A. The curved side portion a2 of the bar A and also the side b2 of the opening of each leaf B are curved con- Y centrically to the point upon which the leaves may be rocked or swung when the inwardlyextending portion b4 ofthe leaf is fitted i n its place under the shoulder formed at the lower extremity of the curved side portion a of the bar A. Consequently when this inwardly-extending portion is litted in its place the leaf may be swung over the top of the bar A until the curved portion b2 of its opening rests against the curved side portion ai of the bar.
In the curved sideportion b2 of each leaf opposite the groove a3 is a groove, b3. These two grooves, a3 b3, together form a cavity for the reception of a locking-piece, C, here shown as made in the form of a rounded pin. This locking-piece is inserted endwise after the placing of the leaf upon the bar. It may not only serve to lock a single leaf of the bar, but may be made long enough to extend through the entire series of leaves arranged upon the bar. It may be made in the form of a ring of stout Wire extending through but a single leaf, and when made so as to fasten but one leaf to the bar it will have the advantage of affording facility for the detachment of a single leaf without'disturbing others, because it can be cut away so as to disengage the leaf through which it passes without having any effect upon the other leaves.
Each of the leaves shown has a flange, b5, at one side around its opening, which fits the bar A. In the example of my improvement shown in Figs. 3 and et the bar A is the same as that previously'described, except that its curved portion a2 has not any groove a3 formed in it; but in lieu of that it has extending from it at intervals a number of lugs, a, having hooked lower ends. The leaves B in this example of my improvement are formed like those here tofore described, except that they lack the grooves b3-and have at the sides of`their openings extensions b, provided with holes bl. When one of these leaves B has been swung IOC into place, its extension b will be adjacent to one of the lugs a" of the bar A, and its hole If will be in line with the lower hooked end of such lug af'. A locking-piece, C, consisting of a pin or ring or analogous device, may be inserted into the hole b1 and under the hooked lower end of the lug a, whereupon it will secure the leaf in position. In this example of my invention, as well as in the first described, a loekingpieee may be employed for each leaf or for the whole series of leaves.
In each example of inyinvention the bar A will preferably have end flanges, al, which will preclude endwise movements of the leaves B, and these will he provided with trunnions, if the gratebar is to rock.
XVhut I claim as luy invention, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a grate-bar having the upper portion of its sides coiivergently curved, a shoulder on one of its sides, and a groove or notch on its other side, of a leaf having an opening corresponding in shape to the eonvergently-curved upper portion of the bur,
and being also provided on one side with an inwardlyextending portion adapted to be placed against said shoulder, so that the leaf may be swung over the top of and fit upon thc top of the har, and upon the other side with a groove or hole, and an independent lookingpieee for securing thc leaf to the bar inserted in said groove, notch, or hole lengthwise of the bar, substantiall y as specified.
2. The combination, With a grate-bar hav ing a shoulder on one of its sides and a groove or notch on the other side, of a leaf provided on one side with an inwardly-extending portion adapted to be placed against said shoulder, so that the leaf may be swung over the top of the bar and upon the other side with a groove, notch, 0r hole, and an independent loekingpieee for securing the leaf to the bar inserted in said groove, notch, or hole lengthwise of the bar, substantially as specified.
