SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,800Jdatecl July 19, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. \VA'rsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Halden, in the county of Middlescx and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spools, of which the fol lowing, taken in connection with the accom-.

panying drawings, is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in spools; and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the aeeo mpanying drawings, where- Figure 1 represents a centrallongitudinal section of my improved spool. Fig. 2 represents a top view of it; and Fig. 3 represents a cross-section on the line A 1 shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 represent, respectively, in plan view and longitudinal section a modilication of my invention.

This invention has for its object to provide spools with a convenient case or reccptaclein which to temporarily insert needles or pins, so as to be within easy reach whenever needed for use; and with this object in view my device is constructed as follows:

If so desired, the central perforation, a, may be utilized by locating within it a tube, of smaller outside diameter than the interior diameter of such central perforation and placing a filling material, It, in the annular space between the tube and recess, as represented in Figs. 4 and 5, which would then serve in the same manner as a pin or needle case. By this arrangement it will be seen that the central perforation in the spool is not in any way obstructed, and can be utilized as usual to introduce within it the usual spoolholding spindle on which the spool is commonly supported on sewing-machines, and the improved spool can be placed on a spindle in the usual manner while in the act of winding the thread upon it or unwinding the same.

Vhat I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is 1. A spool having a recess, 1), open in one end and provided with a suitable filling material, d, or its equivalent, as described, in combination with the metal or other holdingring f, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A spool having a recess, 1), open in one end, and there provided with a cloth or other washer, e, and metal or other holding-ring f, and having within said recess a suitable filling material, (Z, or its equivalent, as described, the whole being arranged and constructed substantially in a manner and for the purpose set forth.
