UNITED STATES PATENT .EFIcE.
GEORGE B. SIEGENTHALER, OF IVOOSTER, OHIO.
MANUFACTURE OF BOOTS AND SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,743, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed April 18, 1887. Serial No. 235,291. (No model.) I
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE l3. SIEGEN- THALER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vooster, in the county of IVayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specifi cation, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a top or outside view, showing the different parts placed in proper position and stitched together. Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing the parts of a boot or shoe stitched to the stay. Fig. 3 is a transverse section showing the stay folded so as to form arib or roll, and the pieces of the boot or shoe folded in proper position for stitching through the pieces and also through the stay. Fig. 4 is a transverse section showing the inner edge of the stay, and the pieces forming the body ofthe boot or shoe folded down in position for stitching along the sides of the rib or fold. Fig. 5 is an inside view showing the seam finished.
The present invention has relation to the manufacture of boots and shoes, the object of which is to provide a seam that will be strong and durable, and at the same time well calculated for the purpose designed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the pieces which form the body of the boot or shoe, and are cut or formed in an ordinary manner.
13 represents the stay, which is originally formed ofastrip of any suitable material of any desired width. To the stay B are stitched the pieces A, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 2, when the inner faces of said stay are folded closely together, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and the pieces A folded as shown in said Fig. 3, when said parts A and B are stitched together, through, behind, or in the rear of the rib or roll a, after which the parts are folded, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and stitched, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
It will be seen that by my peculiar mannerof forming the scam the stay will be between the pieces A, and the rib or roll a will extend beyond the stitching, thereby protecting the seams and placing said seams in such a position that they will not come in contact with the garments when in use, and at the same time throwing the stay upon the inside of the boot or shoe, and passing through the seam and forming a rib or roll on the outside of a boot or shoe, and thereby forming a neat seam. It will also be seen that the stitches formed by first attaching the pieces A to the stay B by stitching through thel'olded portion of the stay will be covered stitches,or what is known as blind stitching.
I am aware of the Patent .No. 228,007, granted to L. E. de IVaru, May 25,1880, in which the quarters of a boot or shoe are secured in position by an intermediate back stay-piece having its free edges left upon the inside of the shoe and secured in place by stitching near the edges, but not through the folded portion of the stay, as contemplated by me; and I would have it understood that I do not claim the arrangement shown in said patent.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described pieces A A and stay B,stitehed together, as specified, said stay be ing closely folded to form the rib or roll a and stitched through the pieces A A and folded portion of the stay, and also stitched through the pieccss A A to the edges of the stay, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. SIEGENTI-I ALER.
