Allen Attorney-Munson & Fiddler ABSTRACT Screw device for adjustable interconnecting two elements, such as a wall and a door frame, comprising a screw member to be screwed into one of the elements having a head portion adapted to be engaged by a wrench or similar tool and an externally screw threaded tubular nut member to be screwed into the other element, and which rotatably surrounds the head portion while-being maintained against axial displacement, the nut member having a socket for receiving the head portion in spaced relationship to provide access for a tool to selectively rotate the screwhead and the nut for adjustment of the spacing between the elements and to lock the screwhead and the nut against relative movement.
1 Claim, 3 Drawing Figures PATENTEDJUH 8 I972 ROLF ARNE REINHOLD JOHANSSON INVENTUR M SON & F DLER DEVICE FOR ADJUSTABLE FIXING OF AN ELEMENT TO A FIXED ELEMENT This invention concerns a device for adjustable fixing of an element, e.g. window frames, door frames etc., which are to be fixed to a fixed element, eg walls and similar. 7
Frames for the above mentioned purposes have previously been fixed by means of nails or screws. After a certain time, there is often a movement in the wall element, in which the frames are fixed. This causes the frames or parts thereof to move, thus disrupting the relationship to the doors or the window fittings, which will no longer fit the frames. The necessary adjustment of the frames, in order to make the doors or the window fittings fit, often causes great difficulties.
With a device made according to this invention it is possible to quickly and efficiently fix the frames to the wall elements and also to adjust said frames in relation to the doors or the window fittings, either immediately after the fixing operation or later when further adjustment is necessary.
The principal feature of the invention includes a screw member to be screwed into one of the elements, eg a wall, and having a head portion adapted to be engaged by a wrench or similar tool; an externally screw threaded tubular nut member to be screwed into the other element, e.g. a door frame or a window frame, which member is rotatable about the head of the screw member but maintained against axial movement with respect thereto, the tubular member having a socket spaced from the head of the screw member to provide access for a wrench or similar tool to engage either the screw head or socket to adjust the relative spacing between the two elements or to engage both the screwhead and the socket to lock them against relative movement.
An embodiment of the invention is more fully described below in connection to the enclosed drawing in which.
FIG. 1 is an exploded view, partly in section, of the screw means.
FIG. 2 is, partly in section, the screw means in operative position, i.e. when the screw means is arranged to adjustably connect the two elements.
FIG. 3 is, partly in section, a view of the tool for fixing the screw means in the elements and for adjusting the distance between the same.
In the drawing, 1 indicates the front part of the longitudinally extending body, said along the major part of its length being arranged with a screw thread 1. 2, 2 and 2" indicate the back part of the body, said part having the shape of an axle and consisting in cross-section of a round journal 2, a groove 2 for a split ring 3 and a tool fitting part 2" with a number of surfaces constituting the free end portion of the axle part. Between the front part 1 and the journal 2 is arranged a collar 4, which in the direction of the screw thread 1 is of a mainly conical shape and in the direction of the journal 2 is arranged with a contact surface 4' at right angles to the journal 2. The nut consists of a tubular body 5, externally provided with a screw thread 5' having the same pitch as the front part of the body screw thread 1. The front portion of the nut is conically shaped and arranged, against the contact surface 4, with a contactable surface 6. The nut at the front part is arranged in the center with a bearing hole 7, made to suit the journal 2. The the nut in the back part center is arranged with a hole 8, having a number of walls, and in connection with the bearing hole 7, a level bottom 8 against which the circlip 3 can make contact. 7
When the nut by means of the split ring 3 is fitted to the back part 2, 2', 2" of the longitudinally extending body, the nut is rotatably connected to the journal 2 but axially immovable. To fix the screw means in the two elements 9 and 10, one 9 being a wall element and the other being a frame 10 for a door or a window, a longitudinally extending tool 11 is used, the longitudinally extending outside surface of which is polygonal in cross-section so that it can be brought to engage with the sides of the hole 8. One end part of the tool is arranged with a hole 12 having a number of sides and corresponding to the tool fitting 2". The other end part of the tool is arran ed with a hole 13 of a diameter that is larger than the overall rameter of the tool fitting. The tool 1 l, l2, 13 can be fixed in. a portable screw or drilling machine or other rotatable means, which can provide power source when fixing the screw means in the elements.
The device according to the invention is operated in the following manner.
When the frame 10 has been placed'in the wall element 9 and by means of wedges or similar been temporary attached to the element, holes are drilled through the frame into the wall. The size of the hole corresponds to the core diameter of the body 1. In the frame 10 this hole is enlarged to a diameter corresponding to the core diameter of the nut.
When fixing the screw means in the frame and the wall, the end part of the tool 1 1 having the polygonal hole 12 is inserted in the polygonal socket 8 the nut, thus automatically locking the nut to the screw body, whereby is prevented from rotating in relation to same. By means of a hand tool or a portable machine the screw means is now fitted in the frame and the wall.
When adjusting the distance between the wall and the frame, the other end part of the tool having a larger hole 13 is inserted in the hole 8 having a'number of sides in the nut. When the tool 11 is turned, the nut is caused to rotate around the journal 1. The screw thread 5 of the nut will then move the frame 10 in relation to the wall 9 as indicated in FIG. 2, since the screw body is fixed in the wall and the screw thread 5' has cut threads in the enlarged hole in the frame and since the nut is axially immovable in relation to the screw body. By rotating the nut one way or the other, the frame can be moved to a fixed distance in direction from or to the wall. When the adjustment of the distance is completed, a cap of suitable material, can be detachably fixed behind the nut in the drilled hole through the frame. If later further adjustment of the distance between the frame and the wall is necessary, the cap can be removed and adjustment can be carried out as previously described, whereupon the cap is inserted again.
