6 Claims, 2 Drawing figures PROTECTIVE SHIELD FOR USE AT THE BITE OF ROLLERS FOR PAPER AND TEXTILE CALENDERS The present invention relates to a protective shield at the bite of papers for paper or textile calenders and comprises a longitudinally extending box made up of angle profiles of thin metal sheet material.
Protective shields of this type are for safety reasons provided on all calenders having rotating rollers, and more specifically, are installed in front of the bites of the rollers. Protective shields of this type are intended to prevent the operator from accidentally getting his hands into the gap between the rotating rollers. Heretofore known protective shields of the type involved comprise at least one angular metal profile which extends parallel to the roller axis in front of the roller gap and is laterally connected to the calender stand or to the housing which carries the bearings for the rollers. With large calenders having a roller width up to meters, the correspondingly long protective angles have to be reinforced by providing intermediate webs which are either welded 'on, screwed on, or riveted on. Moreover, the protective shield may, in a manner known per se, be made up of metal profiles so as to form a closed housing and may be welded, screwed, or riveted together so that a satisfactory stability of the protective shield will be obtained.
inasmuch as the metal profiles which form the protective shield will, in view of the great length of said shield, have relatively great wall thicknesses for reason of stability, the protective shield becomes relatively heavy. When employing light metal, only the requirement concerning a sufficient stability of the protective shield could be satisfactorily met. These protective shields, however, have the tendency, in view of foreign excitement by the machine, to produce relatively strong oscillations.
it is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a protective shield which can also be made in great length so that it will have a good stability and it will be substantially free from oscillations.
These objects and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear more clearly from the following specification, in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 illustrates a cross section through a protective shield according to the invention.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal view of the protective shield according to the invention.
The protective shield according to the present invention for use at the bite of rollers for paper and textile calenders is characterized by a box composed of angle profiles of thin sheet metal, which box is filled with hard foam synthetic material (Hart-schaumkunstofi).
The metal profiles which form the box may, in conformity with the preferred design of the protective shield according to the invention, be perforated in order to make them lighter. The metal profiles which form a box and have been composed of sections by welding, riveting, or screwing, will impart upon the protective shield a sufficient stability even if the box is rather long. The foaming of the interior of the box with synthetic materials dampens the tendency of the protective shield to oscillate or vibrate in view of the foreign excitement by the machine.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the protective shield 1 is composed of an outer angle profile 2 which is welded to an inner angle profile 3 at 4 and along the leg ends. In this way there will be obtained a box of triangular transverse section. This box may additionally be reinforced by the welding-in of intermediate webs 5 and 6.
The ends of the protective shield l have supports 7 welded thereto by means of which the protective shield l is mounted on the calender stand. For purposes of obtaining a saving in the weight, the angle profiles 2 and 3 and, if desired, the intermediate webs 5 and 6 may be punched through or perforated as indicated at 8.
lnstead of designing the protective shield l with a triangular cross section, it is, of course, possible to provide the protective shield with any other suitable contour. The intermediate webs 5 and 6 may also, in a different way than that depicted in the drawing, be arranged and assembled or, if desired, may be completely omitted. lnstead of the connection of the metal profiles 2 and 3 and intermediate webs 5 and 6 by welding, any other connecting method, for instance, riveting or screwing together of the elements may be selected. As material for the angle profiles 2 and 3, and intermediate webs 5 and 6, light or heavy metal may be employed in conformity with the specific requirements involved.
As hard foam synthetic material anystandard material of this type may be used. For instance, ureaforrnaldehyde and polyvinyl formaldehyde foam plastics may be employed.
It is, of course, to be understood that the present invention is, by no means, limited to the particular structure shown in the drawing, but also comprises any modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A protective shield for use at the bite of rollers of paper and textile calenders, which includes: first plate means comprising at least two longitudinal plate sections forming an angle with each other, second plate means likewise comprising at least two longitudinal plate sections forming with each other an angle and having their free longitudinal marginal portions firmly connected to the free longitudinal marginal portions of the respective adjacent plate sections of said first plate means so as to confine therewith a longitudinal shield structure of triangular cross-section, and synthetic material of hard foam substance within said longitudinal structure.
2. A protective shield according to claim 1, in which said first and second plate means are of metal.
3. A protective shield according to claim 1, in which at least one of said first and second plate means is perforated.
4. A protective shield according to claim 1, which includes reinforcing web means bracing the plate sections of said first plate means relative to each other. 7
5. A protective shield according to claim 1, in which the angle defined by the plate sections of said first plate means is less than the angle defined by the plate sections of said second plate means.
6. A protective shield according to claim 1, which includes supporting means at both ends of said longitudinal structure of triangular cross-section for mounting said shield structure to a calender stand.
