UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FANNIE ST.'OLAIR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED SKIRT AN D PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,450, dated June 28, 1887.
' Application filed July 30, 1886. Serial No. 209,524. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, FANNIE ST. CLAIR, of New York, in the county and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Wearing-Apparel, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement on that form of protector designed to cover the lower portion of petticoats, skirts, and dresses during inclement weather, so as to prevent their becoming soiled or muddled;
It consists of a skirt formed of any ordinary cloth, or any suitable material made so as to fit and be tied around the waist, so as to be supported therefrom. To the lower edge of this skirt I stitch or otherwise attach a wide strip of gossamer or rubber cloth, or other suitable material. A whalebone .is secured to the skirt toassist in supporting the foldedturned over the bottom edges of the skirt and be brought up on the outside, thus inclosing and protecting them. A sliding cord in the lower edge of the gossamer skirt forms a suitabletakeup, and when the said gossamer has, been drawn up to the proper position the cord may be tightened and tied over the whalebone. In lieu of this sliding cord, or in addition to it, as may be desired, other fastening devices such as hooks or buttons-may be provided, the essential feature of my invention being the long skirt having the whalebone support, and the gossamer extension which is adapted to fold over the petticoats and skirts for the purpose of protecting them.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure ljisa general view of my invention, and Fig.
2 is a sectional view.
In the drawings, A represents a skirt of any suitable material, to the lower end of which is stitched or otherwise attached a wide strip the skirts A or 1), according to whether it is required for use or not. A sliding cord, E, worked in the lower edge of the gossamer, can
then be drawn and tied so as to prevent the gossamer from falling.
.In addition, or in place of the cord E, I may provide hooks or buttons F for better security.
G is a whalebone, which may be secured in the skirt-protector between. the skirt .A and the gossamer B, so as to assist in supporting the folded-over portion, the edge of gossamer B coming above the whalebone when folded over and the cord E being drawn taut immediately over it. '(See Fig. 1.) By this means the folded-over portion may be prevented from falling. I
Having thus described my invention, whatl claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combined skirt and protector, consisting ofa skirt, A. having means by which it is supported fromthe waist having the whalebo'ne stiffener, and the protector forming an extension to the skirt having a sliding cord, E, for securing it in folded condition above the whalebone, substantially as shown and described. v
2. The combined skirt and'protector, consisting of a skirt, A, having means by which it is supported from the waist, and the protector forming an extension to the skirt, having means by whichits lower edge is supported on the skirt, and the whalebone between the skirt and protector for supporting the means by which the protector is supported.
