To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN H. SAMPSON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Charts and Hanging Fixtures and Cases therefor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which-will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

--Heretofore charts having maps or illustrations on one side only have been made,which adapted to receive it, that said. chart may be hung just as conveniently to the wall as in the inap-case, and so that said chart may have a map, diagram, or illustration made on both sides which can be, easily exposed, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, and' as illustrated in the drawings, in which* Figure 1 is a front perspective of my mapcase, showing some charts removed. Fig. 5 is a detail View showing one of the strips or slats I use for mounting the maphanging fixtures; and Fig. 6 shows a rear and sectional view, respectively, of a portion of slat having modified form of hanging iixtures affixed thereto.

Reference being had to the drawings, A represents a rectangular case or cabinet provided with a suitable cover and adapted to be hung on the wall.

B represents the slats or strips of board on which are mounted the fixtures for hanging the spring-rollers around which the'eharts C are wound. It will be observed that byturning the slats with one longitudinal edge nppermost, so that the chart unrolls from above, one side of the chart will be exposed,while by turning said slat so that its opposite longitudinal edge will be uppermost the chart will unwind from underneath and the opposite surface of the chart will be exposed, substantially as illust-rated in the case in Fig. 2. In order that said Slat B may be suspended from the wall, so that either side of the chart C maybe exposed, I provide screw-eyes on both longitudinal edges of the slat, preferably the same distance apart, as shown in Fig. 5. A plate, e, with a hole in it may be sunk into and secured to the back of the slat B, though having the portion of the said slat back of and in register with the hole in said plate gouged tends to the front edges of the end of the case' A, and thelowcr extremity of the perpendicular part of said recess c is in alignment with the lower extremityof recess b. In order to secure said slat in the case A, I place one end thereof in the recess b, andthen push the other end thereof into the perpendicular part of recess c. The slat is thus held securelyin place, and yet can be easily removed and reversed for the purpose of exposing the opposite side of the chart when desired. l

I- do not wish to be confined to the means hereinbefore described for securing the slats B in the case A, because any mechanic can readily devise means for so doing. Forexample, in Fig. 4, instead of recesses c c, I provide pins E, which project horizontally outward from the bottom of the case and enter corresponding holes-in or near the ends of the slats `B. Then, in order to prevent said slats from falli ng outward, I have the bolts F pushed into their ends from the outside of the case, as shown. The pins E-and bolts F may be used at one end in conjunction with the recesses b at the other end of the case; or the bolts F and pins E may be used at both ends of said ease, as desirable.

The principal features of my invention are the reversibility of the slat, thus enabling one to expose either side of the chart, and the ease with which the chart can be removed from the 5 case and transferred tothe walls. rlwo maps of the same sctcan in this way be exposed at one and the same time, and the case as compared to other cases of the same dimensions can contain twice as many lnaps or charts.

Vhat I claim isl. The combination,with a sheet of suitable fabric having maps, diagrams, or illustrations ou both sides, and roller upon which the same is wound, of a slat, B, in which said roller is journaled, and means for suspending said slat with either horizontal edge uppermost.

2. The combinatiomwit-h a sheet of suitable fabric, roller upon which the same is wound, and removable slat B, in which said roller is zo journaled and removable therewith, of a case,

A, and means for securing said slat therein.

3. The combiuatiou,with a sheet of suitable fabric having maps, illustrations, or diagrams on both sides thereof, roller upon which the same is mounted, and removable slat B, in which said roller is journaled and is removable with, of a case, A, and means for securing said slat therein.

4. The combinatioinwith a sheet of suitable fabric, roller upon which the same is mounted, and removable slat B, in which said roller is j ournaled and removable with, of case A, provided with rectangular recesses b at one end, adapted to receive one end of said slat, and means for securing the opposite end ot' said slat in position.

5. The eombination,with a sheet of suitable fabric, lroller upon which the same is wound, and removable slt B, in which said roller is journaled and removable with, of a case, A, having rectangular recesses b in one end, and r shaped recesses c in the opposite end, as and for the purpose set forth.
