To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, SAMUELC. Enrwis- TLE, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shelf-Support, of which the following is a full, clear, .and-exact description.

This invention relates generally to shelf supports, and is more particularly directed metal, the portions 0f Which are so shaped that it maybe suspended on a supporting strip and held against tilting on said strip.

Further objects and advantages of the nvention will appearas the description thereof proceeds, the inventive idea being and included n the appended Claims.

The support is made up of a bracket 1 and a strip 2, the strip being adapted to be:

secu-red to any suitable upright or any other supporting means in any suitable manner, the preferred form, however, being screws 3.

The strip 2 is provided throughout its length with a number of pockets 4 preferablyformed integral therewith in any convenient'manner, as by forcing a portion of the strip in advance thereof, the pockets bein openy at the top and the bottom whereby t e accummulation of dust or dirt therein is prevented.V Each strip may be of any suitable or desired length and may be provided with any number of pockets, such being determined largely by the size of the cabinet or other outfit with which the invention is used.

The bracket 1 is preferably of integral construction and comprises the vertically and horizontally extending parts 5,` 6, at right angles to each other; the intermediate portion of the vertically extending part 5 is removed, as at 7 whereby an opening is formed, this lower end of the part forming across piece 8 which is offset from the front of the part a suitable distance whereby shoulders 9 are formed the dimensions of which depend on the thickness of the strip 2 with which the bracket is used. In removing the intermediate portion 7 a tongue 10 is provided which extends into thisremoved portion and intermedia-te of the sides for a sui-table distance, the parts 5A and 6 being then bent asv shown lin Fig. 5; the` tongue 10 lies in the same plane asthe cross piece 8 so that when the bracket is positioned on the strip the strip will be included within the said opening and will be secured between thel sidewalls of the opening Vand the shoulders 9 adjacent the lower endy of the vertically extending part 5, such relation thereby holding the bracket firmly positioned on the strip andagainst tilting.

Referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be noted -that the pocket 4 receives the tongue 10, the tongue being wholly included within the pocket and that the rear face of the part 5 lies iush with the rear face of the strip 2.

Referring particularly to Fig. 6, the blank from which the bracket is made is illustrated previous to bending, it beingnoted that two broken lines A, B, are indicated in this ligure; these lines mark the bending of the party in order to arrive at theV structure shown in Fig.`5. The lower brokenl line A is the line of bending ofthe part 6 with yrespcct to the part 5 whereby the right-angle relationv is obtained; the line B is the line in which the tongue 10 is bent in order to bring it in advance of the verticallyextending part 5 so that the tongue may `engage in one of the pockets 4. The depth of the shoulders 9 is such that the cross piece 8 lies closely adjacent the front of the strip 2 when the tongue 10 is inserted in the pocket 4, such formation of the blank from which the bracket is made enabling the sanie bracket to be adapted to strips of different thicknesses by merely varying the distance Patented May 27, 1913. l

between the lines of bending A and B whereby the tongue l0 will be in advance varying distances from the vertically extending part 5. It is also to be noted that by this bending the strip 2 may not only be positioned within the removed portion 7 of the vertically extending part 5, but also be included to a certain extent within the horizontally extending part 6, this relation following because of the distance between the lines of bending A and B.

A structure made in accordance with the preceding description furnishes an extremely simple and stable shelf support and one which may be easily adjusted to accommodate different outfits; in the event of the shelf being unevenly loaded the bracket will not move relatively to the strip because of the shoulders 9 and the side walls of the removed portion engaging the edges of the strip 2. The weight of the shelf and the bracket is carried by the engagement of the tongue l0 in the pocket 4C which construction afords a very simple, and, at the same time, rigid device.

The bracket itself is adapted for dispo-sal independently ofthe strip, inasmuch as certain forms of cabinets, such as bookcases may be provided with two strips as a part thereof, it being clear that the number of brackets used therewith may be varied.

It is clear that the strip 2 may be made in various lengths and may be provided with different numbers of pockets, a single strip being thereby adapted for use with a large number of brackets; to this end the brackets may be made and sold separately as an article of manufacture and in order to pro-I tect a bracket I have set forth claims to the construction thereof as an article of manufact-ure.

Of course the material of which the parts of the support are made will depend on the use of the outfit to which the invention is Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a strip having a ver tically extending pocket therein on one side thereof, and a bracket adapted to support a shelf and comprising a horizontally extending portion and a vertically extending portion, the vertically extending portion being provided with an opening, the width of which is substantially equal to the width of the said strip, the said vertically extending portion lying adjacent opposite edge por` tions of the strip, the horizontally extending portion being provided with a tongue for engagement in the said pocket, the lower part of the said vertically extending portion forming a cross piece suitably offset from the rest of the said vertically extending portion, whereby the engagement between the side walls of the said opening and the opposite edge portions of the strip will prevent the bracket from tilting.

2. The combination of a strip provided with a pocket, a bracket made up of a horizontally extending portion and a. vertically extending port-ion, the said portions lying adjacent opposite edge portions of the strip, the intermediate part of the vertically extending portion being removed for a suitable distance, the width of the removed portion being substantially equal to the width of the strip, the intermediate part of the horizontally extending portion being also removed for a suitable distance, the width of such removed portion being also substantially equal to the width of the stri a tongue carried by the horizontally extending portion and positionedintermediate the side walls of the said removed portion, and adapted for engagement in the said pocket, the side walls of the removed part of the vertically extending portion engaging opposite edge portions of the strip.

3. The combination of a strip having a vertically extending pocket therein in advance of one side thereof, with a bracket comprising a horizontally extending portion and a vertically extending portion, an opening formed in the vertically extending portion, the opening also extending into the horizontally extending portion, the strip lying within the said opening, a tongue carried by the horizontally extending por tion engaging in the said pocket, the lower end of the vertically extending portion being offset a distance suliicient to bring it into the same vertical plane as the said tongue, whereby the engagement of the side walls of the said opening with the opposite edge portions of the strip will bring the said lower end of the vertically extending portion adjacent the front of the strip and will prevent the bracket from tilting.

4. The combination of a strip having a pocket therein, and a bracket made up of two parts extending at right angles to each other, the intermediate portions of the said parts being removed for suitable distances, the width of the removed portions being substantially equal to the width of the strip, a vertically extending tongue carried by one of the parts, and a cross piece carried by the other part, the cross piece and the tongue lying in substantially the same vertical plane so that when the tongue is engaged in the pocket, the said cross piece will lie adjacent the said strip, the side walls of the said removed portions engaging opposite edge portions of the strip, whereby the bracket is prevented from tilting.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a bracket made of a single piece of material and provided with an opening, a tongue extending at right angles from one edge portion of the opening, that portion of the said piece of material opposite the tongue being offset, the said piece of material being bent on a line intermediate the edge portion provided with the tongue and the said oifset portion, whereby two right-angularly extending parts of the said piece are ormed, the line of bending being lsuch thatthe said tongue lies in the same plane as the said oiset portion.

6. The combination of a strip provided with a pocket and a bracket made up of a horizontally extending portion and a vertically extending portion, the intermediate part of the vertically extending portion being removed for a suitable distance, the width of the removed portion being substantially equal to the width of the strip, and a tongue carried by the horizontally extending portion and positioned between the side walls of the said removed portion, the said tongue engaging in the said pocket in the strip, the side walls of the removed portion of the vertically extending ortion engaging opposite edge portions o the strip.

7. The combination of avstrip having a vertically extending pocket therein, with a bracket comprising a horizontally extending portion and a vertically extending portion, the intermediate part of the vertically extending portion being removed for a suitable distance, the said opening extending into the horizontally extending portion, the width of the removed portion being substantially equal to the width of the strip, whereby it receives the strip, a tongue carried by the horizontally extending portion and positioned between the side walls of the said removed portion, the tongue engaging in the said pocket and the side walls of the removed portion engaging the opposite edge portions of the strip. n

8. As a new article of manufacture, a bracket made of asingle piece of material provided with an opening, a tongue extending from one edge portion of the opening, the tongue yextending at a right angle to the part from which it projects, the piece of ma` terial forming the bracket being bent on a line ladjacent to the edge portion provided with the tongue, whereby two rightangu-` larly extending parts are formed.
