(No Model.)
D. G. KLINE. TUBULAR LANTERN.
*No. 364,420. Patentediune '7. 1887.
N PETERS. Photo-MW. wmm OIL UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID C. KLINE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE STEAM GAUGE AND LANTERN COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TUBULA'R LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.364,420, dated June 7,1887.
(No model) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID O. KLINE, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tubular Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in tubular lanterns, and has for its object to provide a simple, strong, and durable device for connecting the bail by which the lantern is carried to the tubular frame of the lantern. My invention consists, to that end, of the improvements which will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper portion of a tubular lantern provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section in line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is apartly-seetional elevation of the upper horizontal tube. Fig. 4 is a crosssection in line yy, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the central vertical tube at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a view of the blank from which the horizontal top tube is formed. Fig. 7 is a sectional view showinga slightlymodified construction of the fastening.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A A represent the upper portions of the side tubes of a tubular lantern; B, the horizontal top tube connected with the upper ends of the side tubes by elbows b; C, the central vertical tube, andD the hell or concave plate attached to the lower end of the central tube, 0.
E represents the wire bail, having its lower ends, e e, bent inwardly and inserted into cars or sleeves ff, formed on the horizontal top tube, B, and having their inner ends separated by a space, f. These ears are formed in one piece or integral with the horizontal tube B, by forming longitudinal depressions or sockets in the upper portion of the tube. The tube B is formed with its sleeves or ears f f of a single blank, G, as represented in Fig. 6. The ears f f are formed by the central portions,
I g g, of the blank located on opposite sides of the central opening, f.
The portions 9 g are bent to form longitudinal sleeves on the top of the tube B, as represented in Figs. 3 and 4.. The longitudinal edge port-ions, h 71, of the The blank is provided with notchesi iin its longitudinal edges, which form an opening, j,
, in the under side of the tube B, by which the latter communicates with the vertical tube 0. The lowerportions, 0 e, of the bail are headed at theirinner ends and inserted-into the sleeves f before the longitudinal bottom seam of the tube is closed. The vertical tube 0 is provided near its upper end with side openings, k k, in which thehorizontal tube B is inserted and secured by soldering. The upper end of the central tube, 0, is closed by a cap, Z.
The cars or sleeves f, being formed in one piece with the horizontal tube B,are not liable to become detached by heat or otherwise, as is the case when the ears are made separate from the pipe and secured by soldering. The
cars are easily and cheaply formedand serve to strengthen the horizontal tube, while they are neat in appearance.
It is obvious that a single sleeve or car may be used for receiving both ends of the bail, as represented in Fig. 7, in which case the rigidity of the bail is relied on for holding the ends of the bail in the sleeve; but I prefer the construction represented in Fig. 3, in which two ears are used in connection with headed bail ends.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a lantern, the combination, with the bail, of a horizontal top tube provided with a longitudinal sleeve formed in one piece with the tube and adapted to receive the bail, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lantern, the combination, with the bail, of a horizontal tube provided in its up per portion with a raised bail seat formed in gnehpiece with the tube, substantially as set ort 3. In a lantern, the combination, with the zontal tube, B, provided with a longitudinal its headed ends seated in said sleeves, subsleeve formed in one piece with the tube and stantially as set forth. 10 inserted in the openings 75, and a bail seated \Vitness my hand this 6th day of August, in said sleeve substantially as set forth. 1886.
5 5. In a lantern, the combination, with the I DAVID C. KLINE.
horizontal tube 13, provided on its upper side XVit-nesses: with two longitudinal sleeves, ff, formed in G. E. KLINE,
one piece with the tube, of a bail, E, having P. L. SALMON,
