UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HIESTER IRWIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NECKTIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,017, dated May 31, 1887.
Application filed April 5, 1887. Serial No. 233,724. (No model.)
To all whom #may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN HIEsTER IRWIN,
n of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Necktie, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
With the ordinary form of scarf or necktie the binding-strip is necessarily exposed to v as the binding-strip is soiled or defaced.
It is to overcome this difficulty and to provide a scarf which may be worn for a much greater length-of ti-me than the ordinary forni of scart` that I have devised the construction forming the subj ect-matter of this application, the invention consisting, essentially, offa binding-strip made up of four, five, or more thicknesses of thematerial of which the outer face of the scarf is formed, said thicknesses of material being united by studs that are passed through button-holes formed in the several thicknesses of material tliefarran gement being such that as one thickness' or layer becomes chafed, soiled, or worn it may be drawn from the binding-strip, and thereby leave a fresh clean surface exposed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a face View of a tie constructed in accordance with the terms of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the broken line :c x of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a view of the4 binding- 4o strip removed fromthe scarf.
trated in the drawings above referred to, instead of using a single thickness of outward material for the binding-strip, I take four, tive, or more thicknesses of such material and unite them in any proper manner, these strips being shaped as shown at l() in Fig. 4, and
each being formed with stud or button* holes 2, as illustrated in said figure.
In forming the scarf, the pendent portions ll of said scarf are connected to the inner facing-strip, or to a lining that is carried thereby. Studs 3 are then inserted through the buttonh oles in the body of .the strip 10. The short end of the strip is carried upward and behind the main body of the strip, and the inner ends of the sections are tacked to the back of the -inner layer of the main body ofthe strip. The
'as long as it would be with the ordinary form of scarf. v
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a scarf, the combination, with a bindingstrip formed with button-holes, of studs fitted within said button-holes, the binding-strip being composed of several layers of the material forming the outer face of the scarf, substantially as described.
JOHN HIESTER IRWIN.
