To all whom it may concern/ Beit known that I, WARREN T. REAsEP., a citizen of the United States, residing at Fair` mont, in the county of Fillmore and State of Nebraska,have invented certain new and useful Improvements-iu Balanced Oscillating Valves for Steam-Engines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon', which form a part of this specitication.
This invention relates to an improvement in balance-valves forlocomotives or other steamengines, the object being to construct a bal-A ance-valvethat may be applied to locomotive or other silnil'ar slidevalve engines by removing the ordinary slide-valve and substituting gitudinal section ofasteam-cylinder furnishedv with my improved valve. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the saine through the dot-ted line x x in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail showing a section through the packing.
The valve is so constructed that the steam is admitted at the ends, pressing equally on all sides, and would without other change be perfectly balanced, except the area of the steam-ports h h. The holes e c in' the to`p of the valve are, however, made of sufficient area to compensate formtheport-openings and back pressure of the exhaust.

This reduction in effective poweris obviated by my improved valve, which, being perfectly cylindrical and without taper, is not liable to stick or have its friction greatly increased by ex- Se pansion, as is frequently the case with oseillati ng valves having ataper; and, further, the ends ofmy valve being provided with a spring packing the pressure of which upon the iianges is regulated by the pressure of thesteam used,
no more friction is generated at these joints than is absolutely required to keep a tight joint between the valve and its casing.
I am aware that it is not new to balance the slide-valves of steanrengines; neither is it new go to partially balance the pressure of the steam upon oscillating valves. I do not, therefore, broadly claim such a device, but limit the same to the especial construction shown and .described in this specification.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as ncw,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following:
