Description
R. WITTY.
Balance Slide-valves- NOA/19,019. Pa:entedMarch24,1874..
J/VIQN'ESSES. V/ i uw, @WWK .Attorney/s.
PATENT RICHARD wITTY, or sTUART, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALANCE SLIDE-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,019, dated March 24,11874; application led January 20, 1874.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD WITTY, of Stuart, in the county of Adair and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balance Slide-Valves 5 and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with a cylindrical steam-chest having a steam passage at the top with inletports, outlet-ports at the bottom, and a round valve, of a valve-stem connected to the valve near the bottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of the steam-chest and valve. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fi g. 3 is a side view of the valve, and Fig. 4 is an end view of the same.
A represents the steam-chest, made in cylindrical form, and bolted to the cylinder of the engine in the usual place where the steamchests generally are bolted. The cylindrical steam-chest A is provided with three ports, a a and b, the middle port b being for the exhaust and the side ports a a for the steam. B represents the valve, made round to t the interior of the steam-chest A, and provided with a number of circumferential split metal or composition rings, cl d, placed in grooves around the valve for the purpose of making the valve perfectly steam-tight while covering the ports. Through the valve are passages c e to allow the steam to pass through the valve from either side of the valve to the open port. In the bottom of the valve is an exhaust-port, h, which will allow the steam to exhaust while passing over the steam-ports. G is the valvestem, which is attached to the valve near the bottom in order to come in a line with the rocker-arm of the locomotive. G is a steampassage on the upper part, extending nearly the entire length of the chest A. In its center is a steam-inlet, D, and at its bottom, near each end, is a small inlet-port, a2, which ports alternately convey the steam within the chest at alternate ends of the valve.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy The combination, with the cylindrical steamchest A with passage G and inlet-ports w a' at the top, and ports a t and b at the bottom, and valve B, of the valve-stem C connected to the valve near its bottom, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of December, 1ST I RICHARD IVITTY.
Witnesses:
C. In. EVERT, JOHN S. LITTLE.
