SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,351, dated April 22, 1890.
Application filed July 27, 1889. Serial No. 318,965. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
for engines, and its object is to provide a new and improved valve which is simple and durable in construction, very effective in operation, and permits an easy reversing of the engme.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the cylinder. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the valve and steam-chest. Fig. at is a side elevation of the valve. Fig. 5 is a sectional side elevation of the valve-packing. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the valve-link.
The engine-cylinder A, of any approved construction, is provided with the usual inletports a and 19, leading to the ends of the cylinder, and with two exhaust-ports c and o, placed opposite each other and at right angles to the ports a and b. The ports cand 0' lead to a common exhaust-pipe d. Over the ports a, b, c, and c operates the circular valve B, mounted to turn in a steam chest C, secured in the cylinder A.
In the valve B are formed at angles to each other the ports 6 and f, adapted to connect alternately with the ports a and I), respectively, and extending through the rim of the valve B, so as to lead into a circular steamspace D, formed in the steam-chest C and connected in the usual manner with the steamsupply. In the under side of the valve C is also formed the exhaust-cavity g, adapted to alternately connect the ports a and b with one 7 of the exhaust-ports c or d, according to the direction in which the engine isrunning.
The valve C is provided with the central spindle E, carrying a slotted link F, pivotally connected with a rod G, connected by suitable mechanism with the engine driving-shaft and serving to impart an oscillating motion to the valve C. The pivot of the rod G on the link F is adjustable, so as to turn the valve a greater or lesser distance, in order to cut off sooner or later. The motion of valve 0 can be reversed by connecting the rod G to the other end of the said link.
In the top of the valve C is formed an annular groove'H, in which fit a number of split rings I, pressed with their top edges against the inside of the steam-chest cover by means of a series of springs J, placed in the bottom of the groove H, and on'which the said split rings rest. The split rings thus form a packing to prevent the motive agent from passing from the space D to and through the bearing of the spindle E.
The operation is as follows:.An oscillating motion is imparted to the valve B from the main driving-shaft, so that the ports 6 and f connect the annular space D alternately with the ports a and 1), whereby the motive agent in the steam-space can pass alternately to the respective ends of the cyl inder A to move the latters piston forward and backward. Atthe same time the exhaust-cavity g in the valve B connects alternately the ports I) and awith one of the ports 0 or 0, according to the direction in which the valve B is running, so that the exhauststeam passes from the respective port I) or a.
through the cavity 9 into the respective port 0 or c, and from the latter to the exhaustpipe cl and to the outside. Thus it will be seen that a very simple and effective valve is provided which can be easily adapted to all kinds of steam-engines.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- 1. The combination, with a steam-chestprovided with an annular steam-space, of a circular valve mounted to turn in the said steamchest, split rings held in an annular groove in the said valve and butting against the steam-chest cover, and springs held in the hot- 5 vided with an annular steam-space, of a valve fitted to oscillate in the said steam-chest and provided with inlet-ports placed at angles to each other and adapted to connect the cylinder inlet-ports alternately with the said steam- 10 space, the said valve being also provided on its under side with an exhaust-cavity adapted to alternately connect the cylinder-ports with the cylinder exhaust-port, a central spindle extending from the said valve, a slotted link held on the said spindle, and a rod held adjustable on the said link to regulate the cutofi and the reversing of the valve, substantially as shown and described.
