W. 0. MQKI'NNIS.
' I STEAM VALVE. I No. 312,488. Patented Pei). 17,1885.
. UNITED STATES Price,
PATENT STEAM -VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,488, datedPebruary 17, 1885.
Y A plication filed September 1, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM C. McKrNNIs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to improvements in slide-valves for steamengines, having for its object, among other things, to reduce friction to a minimum, to effect the adjustment of the parts, to take up or compensate wear, and to promote simplicity of construction; and the invention consists of the combination and disposition of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal section of my improved slidevalve. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same.
In the embodiment of my invention I employ a valve, A, and steam-chest A, whose ends are close'd save where the valve-stem passes through it to exclude from the valve chamber dirt or other foreign substances. The chest A is subdivided into the valvechamber a and the steam-chamber a, the lat ter communicating with said valvechamber by openings a made in the dividing plate or partition (0 between said chambers. The normally lower longitudinal edges of the steamchest A are provided with flanges b, which are connected to the cylinder-plated by screws e e at the corners, which plate, inside of the chest, is thickened up to form the valve-seat B, having steam-ports ff through it.
Intermediately of the screws 0 are passed 40 through the flanges b, additional adjusting- I screws, 0 e, which do not, however, pass I through the cylinderplate d, but hear thereon, and are turned in the opposite direction to that in which the fasteningserews e e are turned, whereby it will be observed that with the valve seated upon the elevated or thickened upseat B,(permitting the lower edgeflanges of the chest A to normally stand ofl from the cylinder-plate,) upon the wearing away of the vahe and its seat said wear can be readily compensated, the screws 6 being screws 6 are turned in reverse direction. The valve A is disposed in the chamber a of the steam-chest A, and is provided with the usual stem, g. The valveA is provided with livesteam ports h h and the intermediate exhauststeam port, it. Said live-steam ports are arranged well toward the ends of the valve, while in one side of the valve (that side next to the cylinder-plate or cylinder) said exhaust-steam port is of such length that when one of the live-steam ports is admitting steam to one side of the piston of said cylinder that end of the exhaust steam port most distant from said livest-eam port will be exhausting into a central pipe, t, arranged to extend vertically through the chamber a of the chest A; or it chamber a, from which the exhaust-steam may be discharged through 'a pipe leading to a point below. Either a 1011 g or short valve may be employed without affecting the action of the parts or increasing the friction, the 1) ms being widened in the use of a shorter valve, and elongated when the reverse is the case. This valve is simple in construction and can be used at the side as well as the bottom of the chest, as in the present instance. It can also be used in practice with metallic orsteel-spring packing. a
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The chest A, subdivided into valve-chain her a and steam-chamber a, having the flange bconnected to plate (I by screws 0, and ad justing-screws e'c, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. In a steam-valve, the plate (I, having integral therewith valveseat B and steanrports ff, in combination with the chest A, having flange b, and screws 0 and e c, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix niysignature in presence of two witnesses.
