IMPRCVEMNT IN SLIDE-VALVES.
Speeilieaton forming part of Letters Patent No. lllll, dated March 2-1, 1874; application filed February 4, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES O. FARcIoT, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slide- Valves5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a slide-valve for steam-engines, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appert-ains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing', in which- Figurc l is a side view of my slide-valve. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the valve through the line a: x, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same through the line y y, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a view of the face of the valve proper.
A represents the valve-seat, which is made separate and independent from the cylinder, and attached to it by anysuitable means, so that in large engines, when the seat requires facing, it is not necessary to remove the cylinder. In the seat A are two passages or ports, a a, to admit steam into the cylinder, and between these is the exhaust-port l). On each side of the steam-ports a a is an inlet-port, d, to admit steam into the valve, said port-s d d opening at the side of the valve-seat, as shown in Fig. l. B represents the valve, which is provided with three arches, e c, in its face, as shown in Fig. 5. In the outer side of the valve B is a longitudinal groove, in which a wheel, C, works, for the purpose of eounterbalancin g the steam-pressure.
It will be noticed that, by the arrangement of the various ports in the valve-seat, the valve has never to pass any of the openings, but has a bearing at all times entirely around the ports, which will enable the valve to work much longer before it requires to be faced.
The wheel G has its journal-bearings in the upper ends of two bars, D D, which are attached to the sides of the valve-seat A by means of set-screws ff, passing through elon-.
gated slots in the ends of the bars, and these bars are allowed to slide upon headed screwbolts h 7L, which are passed through the bars, and screwed into the face of the valve-seat. Between each bar and the head of its screwbolt is interposed a rubber spring, e'. The action of the springs t' fi is to force the wheel C against the back ofthe valve to hold the same in position, and the springs will give sufficiently to allow escape, so that no cylinder will or can be broken by water. The valve is surrounded or inclosed by a casing, G, having catches m m at one end, to hook upon pins u u on the valve-seat, and pivoted hooks m m at the other end, to fasten on pins n n at the other end of the valve-seat.
By this construction, a slide-valve is produced which entirely does away with steamchest, stuffing-box, Ste., as now generally used. The valve is also open to sight, and can be lubricated, examined, and taken apart without unscrewing a single bolt.
This valve can be made to cut ed' at an early part of the stroke without altering the exhaust-openings. In single-slide valves this has generally been done by reducing the travel of the valve, thereby cramping the exhaust, which difficulty is obviated in my valve.
Having thus fully described my invention, i
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The springs i t', arranged in combination with the wheel C and valve B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the wheel C, bars D D, set-screws f, headed screw-bolts h, and springs fi, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the ibregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
