ALONZO B. ARNOLD, OF GLADBROOK, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO ROBERT C. MCOORNAGK, OF SAME PLACE.
HALTER TRHVIIVHNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,311, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed October 1, 1886. Serial No. 215,070. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALoNzo B. ARNoLD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Gladbrook, in the county of Tama 5 and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Halter, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to save time and labor in male" ing halters, and toproduce an improved halter IO at a reduced cost; and my invention consists in the construction of a device adapted to couple a piece of rope with a leather strap and in combining four of the cou1)liiigs-two leather straps, one piece of rope, and a metal I 5 ring-as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompany ing drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective'view of one of my metal coupling devices, and Fig. 2 a perspective'view of my complete halter.
a is a curved metal tube, and b a loop cast integral therewith in a mold. The device may vary in size, as required, to suit ropes and halters of different sizes and strength. V-shaped notches in the open ends of the curved tube allow the ends to be readily compressed to clamp fast to a rope passed through the tube.
To construct a halter, I take a single piece of rope and slip thereon four of the tubular couplings and clamp them fast to the rope (by simply pressing the edges of the notched open ends inward upon the rope) in four different positions, two of them equidistant from the center of the rope and the two others equal distances from the ends of. the rope, as shown in Fig. 2. I then pass the ends of the rope jointly through a metal ring and double them backward, and bind them together by bonding around the doubled portions pieces of wire and twisting the ends of the wires together and pressing them into the rope, or by wrapping wire around them, or in any suitable way. I next pass a leather strap, (1, having a buckle on its end, through the loops b of the two couplings nearest the center of the rope, and 5 also through a metal ring on the joined ends of the rope, and buckle the strap. I also fasten a buckle to the loop I) of one of the couplings nearest the joined ends of the rope by means of a piece of leather and a rivet and 0 a leather strap, f, to the mating coupling, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Complete, strong, durable, neat, and cheap halters are thus produced that can be readily fitted and applied to horses and other animals 5 5 in a common way.
I am aware thata curved tubular loop having an eye on its convex side has been used to connect suspender-ends with a buckle in such a manner that the Suspender-ends could slide back and forth in the said tube; but a metal coupling device consisting of a curved tube having an integral loop and slots in its ends, and adapted to be permanently fixed to a rope and adjustably and detachably con nected with a leather strap, is novel and greatly advantageous in constructing halters.
I claim as my invention- 1. A metal coupling device adapted to be fixed to arope and detachably connected with a leather strap, consisting of a tube, to, having an integral loop, I), and slots in its ends, substantially as shown and described.
2. A halter composed of a single piece of rope, four metal tubes having loops projecting from their sides, a metal ring, two leather straps, and two buckles, constructed as dcscribed, and for the purposes stated.
ALONZO B. ARNOLD.
