To aZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that l, GEORGE MALPAss, Jr., a citizen ofthe United States, residingin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Knitting-Machine Needles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of knittingmachine needles which have j acks of sheet metal the bits of which are thickened and strengthened by re-enforcing plates, the obj ect of my invention being to effect the attachment of these re-enforcing plates to the bits of the jacks more securely than by the usual plan of soldering.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View, on an enlarged scale, of a knitting-machine-needle jack having its bit strengthened by a re-enforcing plate in the usual manner; Figs. 2, 3, and 4, perspective views, also enlarged, of a jack having its bit re-enforeed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 4 being partly in section g Fig. 5, a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of the finished jack 5 and Figs. 6 to 9, sectional views illustrating modifications of the invention.
In Fig. l, A represents a jack for a knittingmachine needle, a being the stem of thejack, notched at the top for the reception of the lower end of the ncedleshanl, and having in front a projecting bit, b, which is thickened and strengthened by means of a re-enforeing plate, d, vfolded around the bit. Usually this 1re-enforcing plate is retained by soldering it to the bit; but this method is insecure, and hence objectionable.
In carrying out my invention, therefore, I form in the bit b of the jack a slot, f, and I notch the opposite sides of the re-enforcing plate d so as to form tongues i i', the former being, by suitable machinery, bent laterally through the slot f of the bit, and then caused to overlap the tongues t, which are thereby deflected into the slot, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, the length of the slot being sufficient to permit such deflection. The re-enforcing plate is thus rigidly and securely confined to the bit of the jack, irrespective of any solder, and the latter may be dispensed with, if desired, although I prefer to apply solder after the reenforcing plate has been locked to the bit in l in Fig. G, for instance, these tongues engaging directly with the bit a, and the bent end of the tongue being contained in the slot of the bit, as shown at the lower portion of Fig. 6, or being contained in a slot in the opposite side plate of the reenforce, as shown at the upper portion of said figure.
As shown in Figs. 2 to 6, the re-enforcing plate is in one piece, bent or folded around the bit of the jack; but separate plates may, it will be evident, be employed in place of the single plate, as shown in Fig. 7, for instance, and there may be but one slot inthe bit of the jack, as shown in Figs. 2 to 5, or upper and lower slots for the reception, respectively, of the upper and lower tongue or tongues ofthe re-enforcing plate. y
Vshcn the bit has but a single slot, the re` venforcing plate may have but a single tongue, bent into the slot, as shown in Fig. 8, or through the slot and into a slot in the opposite side of the reenforcing plate, as shown in Fig. 9, so as to form upper and lower retaining shoulders or stops, such as are formed by the tongues t in Fig. 6, and by the tongues i in Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination of the jack having a slotted bit with a tongued re-cnforce having its tongued portion bent into the slotted por tion of the bit, all substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the jack having a slotted bit with a tongned reenforce having upper and lower retaining shoulders or stops within the slot of the bit, all substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the jacl; having a slotted bit with a revenforce the opposite side plates of which have engaging tongues bent into the slotted portion of the bit, all substantially as specified. v
