NEEDLE FDR KNITTING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented May20, rain.
Application filed June 4, 1908. Serial No. 436,706.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, ROBERT W. Soon, a citizen of the United States, residing in Leeds Point, Atlanticcounty, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Needles for Knitting- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in knitting. machine needles of the type shown in my Letters Patent No. 834,763, dated October 30,1906, the object of my presentinven'tion being to so construct such a needle that it will spread the stitch which is being transferred from it to another needle, and will thus iacilitate the application of said stitch to the receiving needle. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, on enlarged scale, of one type of knitting machine needle embodying'my invention: Fig. 2 is a section of thesame on the line aa, Fig.1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of another type of needle embodying any invention, and Fig. 4c is a perspective view illustrating a modification of the invention.
The needle shown in Figs. 1 and 2 has a stem 1 with hooked. end 2 and swinging latch 3, said stem projecting "from a shank 4; which is disposed at an angle in respect. to the stem. The bend between the stem and the shank of the needle has a grooved face 5 and is expanded laterally in respect to the stem and shank as shown at 6 in Figs. 1 and 2, whereby, when the needle is projected to make a transfer and the stitch to be transferred is hanging on the bend of the needle, said stitch will be spread laterally and its application to the receiving needlewill be correspondingly facilitated.
s In Fig. 3 have illustrated the appliea tion of my invention. to another'type of needle, shown in my Letters Patent lbefore referred to,-said needle having a straight stem 7, with projecting loop 9 thereon, the
bend between the upper member of this loop and the upper portion of the stem of th; needle being laterally expanded and grooved in the same manner as the bend at the junc i tion of the two members of the needle shown in Fig. 1.
When that. portion of the needle which constitutes the'bend is grooved in advance of the bending operation, the latter opera: tion will naturally cause the lateral expans on of the metal'at the bend, but the grooving of this portion of the face of the needle. while preferable, is not essential in all cases, as that portionof the needle which'is to constitute the bend may, if desired, be flattened and laterally expanded either before or after thebending operation, 'as shown for instance at 10 in Fig. 4.
I claim:
1. A knitting machine needle having a stem bentso as to present members atan angle to one another, the metal of which the .bent portion of thes tem is composed being expanded laterally.
2. A knitting machine needle having a stein bent so as to present members at an angle to one another, said stem having a. grooved and rigid lateral expansion at the bend.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name tothis specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT \V. SCOTT.
