RUSH B. HEINTZELMAN, OF NEV YRK, N. Y.
INHALER.
SPECIFICATION forming pari; of Letters Patent No. 363,067, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed October 8, 1886. Serial No. 215,650. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Re it known that I, Rusa B. HEINTZEL- MAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Respirators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to inhalers or respirators used for inhaling medicinal or other vapors to act on the lungs.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved inhaler or respirator, which is so constructed that the air drawn into the lungs is'permcated with medicinal vapors and the air that is exhaled is conducted out of the inhaler without coming in contact with the cap containing medicinal or antiseptic material.
The invention consists in a tube provided with a longitudinal bore, in one end of which a cup for holding the medicinal or antiseptic material is located. A valve is provided in front of said holder for the antiseptic material, and an aperture between the mouthpiece and the valve, all as will be fully described and set' forth hereinafter, and finally be pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my im proved inhaler.v Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view ofthe same on the linex, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The casing A is made of hard rubber, cellu loid, wood, or other suitable material, and is provided at one end with an enlarged cavity, B, from which a bore, C, leads to the other smaller end, forming the mouth-piece D. The open end of the cavity B is closed by a screw plug or stopper having a longitudinal aperture, F, said stopper being provided on the inside with a projection, G, on which a perforated cap, H, is held, in which cap the iibrous or other material is placed, said material being saturated with an antiseptic or medicinal iluid.
A short distance in front of the perforated cap H an apertured partition, K, is held in the casing A, and on said partition a valve, L, of leather or othersuitable material, is mounted to open toward the mouth-piece end of the device.
A short distance in front of the partition K an aperture, M, is provided in the casing A, which is for the purpose of establishing communication between the outer air and the bore C of the device.
The device is used in the following manner: The cap E is placed in one end of the device to close the same and the mouth-piece D placed into the mouth. The finger is placed 6o on the aperture M, and the air passing through the cap E is inhaled through the perforated cap H, and the fibrous material saturated with the medicinal or antiseptic iiuid, through the aperture of the partition K, the valve L being opened, and through the bore O into the mouth. W'henv the air is exhaled, the finger is raised from the aperture M, and the air passes out through the bore C and the said aperture M.
It cannot pass through the aperture in the par- 7c tition K, as the pressure of the exhaled air closes the valve L. Only the air inhaled passes through the material saturated with the antiseptic or medicinal liquid, the exhaled air passing through the aperture M Without coming in contact with the medicinal or antiseptic materials, thus avoiding useless evaporation of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 8o In an inhaler, the combination, with atubular casing, of an apertured plug screwed in one end, the opposite end being adapted to form a mouth-piece, a perforated holder for medicated or antiseptic material on said plug, 8 5 an apertured partition in said easing in front of the plug, and a valve in the partition, the abovementioned tubular casing being provided with an aperture for establishing communication between the outer air and the interior of the 9o casing, Whichaperture is located between the mouthpiece and the apertured partition, substantially as shown and described.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RUSH B. HEINTZELMAN.
