LOUIS HAAS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,064, dated May 17. 1887 Y pplication filed January 18, 1887. Serial No. 224,680. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LOUIS Hans, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar- Boxes, of which the following is a specifica tion.
rIhis invention relates to an improved cigarbox by which the cigars are securely packed in such a manner that they cannot be interchanged for cigars of'inferior quality or of different manufacture, the cigars being pack ed at thesame time in the boxin such amanner that a neat and attractive advertisement for the manufacturer is produced; and the invention consists of a cigar-box the end walls o f which are provided at or near their centers with slots, through which bands. ribbons, cords, or other devices are passed after the same have been placed transversely over two or more layers of cigars in the box the ends of said bands, ribbons, 85e., being pasted or otherwise rev tained at the bottom of the box, and the slots in the end walls closed by downwardly-bent flanges of eyelets applied to said slots, so as to prevent air from entering into the box.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a top view of my improved cigar-box, showing the band by which the cigars are retained in the same. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on thelinezr or, Fig. 1,; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents a cigar-box of any suitable size, which is provided in the middle parts of the end walls with slots fr a, said slots being` provided with sheet-metal eyelets b,that are tightly applied by their flanges to the end walls of the box. rIhe layers ofcigars in the box are retained by longitudinal bands, ribbons, or cords B, that extend transversely across the bodies of the cigars, preferably at every second layer of the same, the ends of each ribbon, band, or cord being passed through the slots a a to the outside, and secn red to the bottom by pasting, or in any other suitable manner.
The eyelets b b are provided at their outer and upper edges with upwardly-extending anges of a sufficient width, so that they can be bent ldownwardly over the openings or slots a and close the same, while at the same time binding tightly on the ribbons, bands, or cords B, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the evaporation of moisture from the cigars in the box is prevented.
The ribbons or bands B form a protecting device for the cigars in the box, so that the box cannot be refilled with cigars, nor cigars of an inferior quality or of other manufacture substituted. The bands or ribbons also form a neat and attractive advertising device, on which the special brand, trade-mark, dre., of the manufacturer may be advantageously displayed.
Having thus described my invention. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a cigar-box having slots at the middle portion ofits end walls, and eyelets in said slots, sai d eyelets having vBauges at their upper and outer edges, of ribbons or bands extending transversely over the layers of cigars and through said eyelets to the bot,- tom ofthe box, to which they are attached-the fianges of the eyelets being bent downward over the bands or ribbons, so as to close the slots in the end walls and bind firmly on the bands or ribbons, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my naine in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS HA AS.
Vitnesses:
PAUL Gonrm., SIDNEY MANN.
