Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented uly 4,1916.
Application led February 19, 1912. Serial No. 678,739.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ADoLrH SORGE, Jr.,
a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resi-` dent of St. Joseph, in the county of Berrien and State of Michlgan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boxes.
The object of the invention is to provide a box or receptacle adaptedfor dispensing material contained therein in separate measured quantities as wanted for use; and to protect the unused portions of the material remaining in the box or receptacle from 'contact with the air, `which might cause the same to deteriorate.v
To this end, a box or receptacle of my invention comprises a plurality of separate units of suitable size to contain a'desired predetermined quantity of any material or substance, said units being connected to form a unitary structure, and in' such 'manner that the contents ofany succeeding unit may be rendered accessible for use by removing or detaching the preceding adjacent unit.
The device also comprises the 'various other features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, -in which my invention is fully illustrated,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a inished box or -receptacle of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical, central sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the units of my improved box or receptacle; Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view.
Referring now to the drawing, A designates, as a whole, a box or receptacle of my invention,- said box or receptacle comprising a plurality of units, each consisting of a separate small box a. Said' unit boxes a are arranged in juxtaposed series, bein` pref-V erably superposed, and are detachab ysconnected to form a unitary structure, preferably by means of a binder a', which 1s wrapped around said unlt. boxes a, arranged in series as stated, and securely gumrned, pasted or otherwise rmly attached to the sides of all of the units of the series. In practice, the wrapper a preferably consists of a suitable label.
In order that the finished box or receptacle A may present a neat appearance, thesides of the units a, to which the wrapper a is applied, are preferably made substantially straight, so that said wrapper a will fit the samesmoothly.
While my invention contemplates the use of any usual or approved form of unit boxes a comprising a body portion and a cover or closure therefor 'secured thereto in any desired manner, I prefer the form of units shown in the drawing, each of which consists of a body portion 1 and a closure therefor, consisting of a disk 2 which rests against the end of said body portion 1 and is -secured thereto by means of a wrapper 3 attachedto the side walls of said body portion 1 and folded over and firmly secured to said disk, as by a suitable adhesive. If desired, my invention contemplates providing perforations 4 in the sides or ends of said units a top provide for sifting out the contents thereof in using the same, in substantially the manner of an ordinary pepper box. In the preferable construction shown, also, said unit boxes are provided with raised or `struck up portions 5 on one of their ends, respectively, land with corresponding recesses 6 in their opposite ends adapted to receive said raised or struck up portions 5 of adjacent boxes, thereby forming a male and female joint between adjacent units, both the sides of said raised por-g vtions 5 and of said recesses 6 bein preferably slightly tapered andthe relatlon being such that said raised portions 5 will snugly nest in the recesses 6. lA particular advantage of this construction is that the differrelatively to each other and will be temporarily secured together during the process of applying the-binding wrappers a thereto. VA further advantage of said construction, when an y'inclosed side or end of said unit boxes, respectively, e is perforated, is
that, by forming said perforations on either removing the preceding adjacent unit, if the' end of said unit thereby exposed is perforated, or, if tightly sealed, by detaching tho-y preceding` adjacent unit and then'opening the exposed side thereof.
90 entunits a. willpbe centered or positioned Where the exposed side or end of the first unit box a is perforated, said perforations will preferably be sealed by a suitable closure, which may be a closed disk 7 secured serles With corresponding' sides of succeeding units overlaid and covered by preceding adjacent units2 whereby the covered sides of succeeding umts Will be uncovered and exposed by detaching the preceding adjacent unit, each of said units forming a complete box in itself capable of being utilized inde'- pendently when detached, Vand said unit boxes being provided on one of their sides vWith struck up or raised portions and with V corresponding depressions in their opposite sides adapted to receive the raised portion of another box unit, the sides of said raised portions and ,of said depressions beingI correspondingly tapered and one thereof being perforated inside of its tapered sides, subv stantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I alix -my signature 1n presence of two subscribing Witnesses this .16th day of February A. D., 1912.
