To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be' it known that I, W'ALTER CLIFF, of NVortley, near Leeds, in the Kingdom of Great Britain, have invented an Improvement in Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.

Bathtubs have been made of fire-clay, enameled upon the inside and sometimes painted upon the outside, and a molded rim has been IO made in one with the tub, at its upper edge. Baths of this kind are usually intended to stand without any inclosing woodwork; but in consequence of the high heat required for the hard glaze upon the surface of the tub the [5 highly-ornamental colors and glazes such as the majolica glazescannot be made use of, as they are injured by the high heat.

The object of the present invention is to allow for highly ornamenting the top edge of the fire'clay bathtub, so as to better adapt it to the highly-finished bath rooms, in which the bath-tubs arenot closed around with woodwork, and at the same time allow for the use of various colors or combinations of colors in the glazing or ornamenting of the surface.

In the drawings, Figure l is a cross-section of a bath-tub with my improved rim. Fig. 2 is a plan View of one section of the rim, and Figs. 3 and 4t are sections showing different 0 shapes of moldings applied to the top edge of the bath.

The bath-tub A is of any desired size or shape, and it is made of fire-c1ay or other quality of earthenware or similar material;

but instead ofhaving a roll or molding at the top edge, such molding, B, is a separate piece, made in suitable lengths or sections and of the proper curvature for the ends or corners, and the rim or molding is adapted to fit upon the top edges of the tub, and to being secured thereto by hydraulic cement or other suitable adhesive material. With this object in view,

the top edges of the bath-tub may be rectangular in section, as seen in Fig. 1, or with a grooved upper edge, as seen in Fig. 3, and the rim or molding is to be hollow on the under surface and of any desired shape sectionally, so as to set over the edges of the bath-tub and be cemented thereto.

The exterior surfaces of the rimor molding are to be ornamented by enamel in any suitable colors or figures, and the said surfaces may be smooth, ribbed, or figured.

By my improvement the rim or molding, being separate, can be fired or burned to any 5 5 desired extent, according to the quality of the clay and oft-he glaze, and the rim is not liable to injury in transportation, because it can be kept separate and cemented to the tub after the same is set in place and the pipes and tit tings connected therewith.

It is to be understood that my invention applies to bathtubs and separate rims or moldings of earthenware, china, terracotta, stone ware, glass, or any other ceramic material. e Dowels or pins may be used for securing the rim in place.

I claim as my in venlion- 1. As anew article of manufacture, an earth enware bathtub with a separate earthenware 7o rim or molding cemented to the upper edges thereof, substantially as set forth.

2. An earthenware bathtub having a plain upper edge, in combination with a separate rim of earthenware, made in sections and 0e 7 mented upon the edges of the tub, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the ceramic bathtub, of a ceramic rim in sections and recessed upon the under surfaces to fit over the edge of the bathtub and be cemented thereto, substantially as set forth.
