WAGON-JACK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,038, dated May 17, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN M. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVagon-Jacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of refer ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wagon-jack. Fig. 2 is afront elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.

The object of this invention is to provide wagon-jacks simple in construction and convenient for use, and which can be operated from a position out from under the wagon, thus avoiding the necessity of the operator stooping or reaching under the wagon to place or operate the same. I attain these objects by certain constructions and combinations of the various parts of the wagonjaek, in which consists my invention, as will hereinafter be fully described, and then claimed.

A represents the sill, which is provided with an upright frame, B, and standard 0, each inortised into and securely bolted to its sides at 1, .4, 3, and 4, and also provided with fulcrum-bearings G G, between which a lever, D, is pivoted at p. On the short arm of the lever a cam, D, is formed, of the shape shown in Fig. 1 by the partially-dotted line. The frame inclose's a head-block, E, the lower end of which rests on the cam-shaped head of the lever D, its upper end having one or more shoulders, u, below its top b, so as to adapt it to wagons of different heights. It is also pro vided with a slot, S, by which its movement is limited by the fixed pin f, passing through the frame B. The standard 0 is ratchetfaced to engage a plate attached to the side of the handle of the lever D and hold it in the desired position when the weight is on the head-block E.

By means of the peculiar shape of the camhead of my lever D, and by placing the fulcrum of the lever out from under the headblock E in the bearings G G, the block can be sufficiently lowered by elevating the handle of the cam-headed lever D comparatively a short distance from the sill A, thus making it practical to use a long lever and correspondingly-long sill, so that the handle of the lever can extend out from under the wagon and the object desired by my invention be attained.

Having thus fully described my invention. I claim as new and desire to secure my Letters Patent- In a wagon-jack, in combination with the frame, the head-block sliding within the frame and provided with a head and a shoulder, by which it is adapted to wagons of different heights, and having a slot by which its move ment is limited, the lever having a cam-shaped head, as shown, extending into the frame and supporting and bearing directly on the bot tom of the head-block, but not connected thereto, and the lever fulcrumed in bearings outside of the head-block, substantially as and for the purpose described.
