SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,033, dated May 17, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, XVILLLin HENRY WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mohawk Village, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Halters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in halters; and its object is to provide improved means for fastening the crown-piece, the noseband, and the chin strap together.

To this end the novelty consists in the peculiar features of construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a halter having my improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is aperspcctive view of a section of the halter. Fig. 3 is asectional view taken centrally through the plates. Figs.

4 and 5 are detail perspective views of the locking-plates. Fig. 6 is a section similar to Fig. 3, but taken at right angles thereto. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the plates locked together, but with the straps removed.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the nose-band, B the crown-piece, and C the chinstrap, which are arranged in the usual manner relative to each other, as will be readily understood from the drawings. As will be readily understood, the crown-piece passes up over the head of the animal, the noseband across the face, and the chin-strap back of or below the chin. The hitching rope or strap is attached to the chin-strap, as shown.

The ends of the noseband and crown-piece are held together by and between the independent removable locking-plates D E, and the cliiirstrap is held by having its ends passed through loops 6, which are formed integral with the plates E, and project from the rear edge thereof. The outer face or side of the plate E is provided with a flange, F, which is formed along the upper and lower and rear edges of said plate. The ends of this flange F are provided with recesses or notches j, which, as shown, are at the opposite ends of the front edge of the plate. The function of these notches will be hereinafter set forth.

It will be readily seen that the construction of the plate, as just described, forms a depression in its outer face, and the end of the noseband is placed in this depression and held therein, as will be presently described. At the center of the plate I form an opening, 9, and around the inner edge of said opening I provide the cylindrical tongue or projection G. This projection G is internally screwthreaded, and t-hescrew-th reads extend through the opening in the plate. The outer plate, D, is provided with flanges II I at its front and rear edges, respectively, and also has a central perforation or opening, (I, as shown. This opening (I is countersunk, as shown, and the retaining-screw J is passed through this opening into the opening 9 'in the plate E and made to engage the said opening 9 in the operation of the device. The flange H at the front edge of the plate D is provided at its opposite ends with the points, lugs, or projections h, and when the device is applied to the halter these points h engage the notches f, the nose band being held between them. The flangeI is deeper than the flange II, and has its opposite corners cut away, as at In use the end of the noseband is placed in the depression in the plate E, and fitted over the tongue G by means of a perforation pro vided for that purpose. The end of the nose hand does not extend to the rear edge of the plate E, but stops a short distance therefrom, leaving an open space between the end of the strap andtheflangc along the edge of the plate, as shown in Fig. '6. The end of the crown piece is placed against the inner face of the plate D, resting between the flanges H I. The crown-piece and plate D are placed upon the nose-band and the plate E, the flangel resting in the space between the end of the nose-band and the flange F, and the points It fitting in the recesses or notches f. The retaining-screw is then passed through the plates, the crownpiece, and the nose-band to secure the several parts together.

It will be seen from the foregoing that the several parts are securely fastened by means of a single screw, and that the construction of the plates and arrangement of the flanges prevent the parts rotating one upon another. The end of the crowirpiece is provided with a se ries of perforations, b, and the halter can be made to fitany sized head by adjusting one or another of these perforations to be engaged by the retaining-screw, as will be readily understood.

The several parts are all removable, and in case .one strap or plate becomes broken, or is rendered useless in any way, it can be easily replaced without necessitating the provision of an entirely new halter.

Having thus described myinvention,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The combination of the plate E, havinga depression in its outer face to receive the end of the nose-band, the nose-band, the .crownpiece arranged over the nose-band, and the plate D, secured over the crown-piece and engaging the plate E, to hold the several parts together, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the plate E, having a depression closed on three sides, the noseband having its end fitted in this depression, but not extending to the rear side thereof, the crown-piece placed over the nose-band, and the plate D, secured over the crown-piece, and

having the flange I, fitting between the end of 25 the nose-band'and the rear end of the plate E, substantially as set forth. L V

3. The combination,with the nose-band-and crown-piece, of the locking-plates D E, pro Vided with the interlocking flanges F and HI, respeotively,whieh mutually engage and hold the several parts against rotation, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination, with the'nose-band and the crown-piece, of the independent lockingplates having mutually-engaging flanges, the flanges of one plate having-the notches f, and the flanges on the other plate having points which fit in said notches, substantially as described and shown.
