SHIRT=NECKBAND.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,965, dated May 1'7, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM HUSBAND, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 28 Clarence Street, Edinburgh, in the county of Mid-Lothian, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts and in the Attachment of Collars Thereto, (for which I have received Letters Patent in Great Britain No. 1,492, dated February 2, 1886,) of which the following is a specification.

In accordance with my invention the collar is attached at its ends to the shirt without the aid of buttons or button-holes, and in such a manner that it can adjust itself to the neckband of the shirt; and the shirt is so constructed as to adapt it to be worn with either the right or the left side of theshirt-front next the opening therein exposed to View.

The subject-matter claimed is hereinafter specified by the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the upper part of the shirt without the collar. Fig. 2 is a like view with the collar applied. Fig. 3 is a like view with the collar attached in a different way.

The shirt at the neckband is provided with two small loops, A B, formed by bands attached one on either side of the front opening of the shirt, in line respectively with the respective rows of stud-holes, as represented in Figs. 1, 3, and 4. The upper and lower edges of each loop-band are sewed to the neck of the shirt, so that the loops are formed with their openings extending transversely to the opening in the shirt-front.

In order that the shirt-front may be arranged with either the right or the left side exposed to view next the front opening, one side of the shirt-frontin this instance the left side-is at its lower edge left unattached for about an inch, or a little more, at or near the waist-line E. The other side of the shirt front is firmly attached to the shirt-body at or near the waistline entirely to its edge or to the line of the front opening in the shirt. In

this way, as will readily be understood, the

left side of the shirt next the opening therein may either be lapped over or under the opposite side, thus providing for presenting a fresh or unsoiled portion of the shirt to view after the soiling of one portion of the bosom. By securing one side of a shirt-front to the waist, or adjacent portion of the body of the shirt, entirely to the front opening at its lower end, a desirable degree of stiffness is imparted to the shirt-front, and greater strength is attained than where, as has heretofore been sometimes the case, both sides of the shirtfront were left unattached at the lower end of the front opening.

IVhen the shirt is put on and the front fastened by inserting studs in the usual way, the neck being still unfastened, the collar, which is made with narrow projecting ends 0 D, is put on and adjusted in either of the following ways, at the option of the wearer:

Both ends of the collar may be inserted into one loop-say the loop A, as in Fig. 2thus closing the opening at the neck, or one end of the collar may be inserted into the loop Aand the other into the loop B, Fig. 3, thusleaving the shirt-front open at and near the neckband.

It will be seen that by my invention buttons and button-holes for fastening the collar in front are dispensed with, and that the collar is left free to accurately adjust itself to the neckband of the shirt, thereby securing a perfect fit and comfort to the wearer.

I claim- 1. The hereinbefore-described improvement in shirts, which consists of the shirt-front having the opening and the loops A B, secured to the neckband on opposite sides of and adjacent to said opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the shirt having the neckband provided with the loops Aand B on opposite sides of and adjacent to the front opening in the shirt and the collar with the projecting ends 0 and D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
