UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM FREUDENBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COAL-SCUTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,616, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed February 18, 1887. Serial No. 228,043. (No model:)
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved coal-scuttle, which can be easily carried and conveniently held without spilling the coal, and which can be held at an inclination to facilitate shoveling the coal out of the same conveniently.
The invention consists in a cylindrical ves- 'sel having an open end, a bail at said open end, and on its side a pivoted brace or leg combined with a stop which permits of resting the scuttle on the floor at an inclination, all as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved coal-scuttle. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side View of the same, showing the same inclined.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The coal-scuttle A consists of a cylindrical vessel closed at the bottom and openat the top and having the top beveled, and at the sides of which top two lugs, B, are riveted, to which a bail, O, is pivoted. On the bottom of the short side of the scuttle a handle, D, is fastened, to facilitate dumping the coal into the stove. On the other or longer side of the scuttle two ears,E, are fastened.to which a U- shaped leg or brace, F, is pivoted, which, when the scuttle stands erect, rests snugly against the side of the same.
On the top of each ear E a stop-lug, (1, projects laterally, against which the upper or pivoted end parts of the brace of leg F' can rest, for the purpose of holding the scuttle in place at an inclination, as shown in Fig. 3. When the scuttle is to be carried,it is held by means of the bail 0. When it is desired to shovel coal out of the scuttle, the same is inclined, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the pivoted brace or leg F swings from the side of the scuttle and rests upon the floor. The open end of the scuttle is swung down until the edges of the legs rest against the stops G, whereby the scuttle is held in the position shown in Fig. 3.
The coal can be shoveled out of the same, and there is no need of grasping the scuttle and tilting the same, as in the ordinary coalscuttles in use heretofore.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a coal-scuttle, the combination, with a cylindrical vessel, of ears fastened on the outside of said vessel at about half the height of the vessel, which ears project laterally from the vessel and are provided with stoplugs, and a U shaped leg or brace having its ends pivoted to said ears, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM FREUDENBERG.
