Filed Ang. 15, 1969, Ser. No. 853,595 Int. Cl. E06b 1/52 ILS. Cl. 109-77 3 Claims ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE A door frame having a lead filled jamb with a strainless steel hat-shaped cover adapted to engage the edge of a door having a lead inner face and stainless steel outer face.
SUBJECT MATTER OF INVENTION The present invention relates to a radioactive impervious door jamb designed for use on containers storing radioactive material.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION SUMMARY OF INVENTION It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an optical seal against leakage of radiation at the junction of a door with the top, bottom, and sides of the door frame. A further object of the present invention is to provide an improved ldoor frame for use on radioactive containers in which the improved member functions as a radioactive impervious door jamb. A further object of the present invention is to provide a radioactive impervious striker plate adapted for use with radioactive impervious containers that is designed to provide a simple locking mechanism. A further object of the present invention is to provide a protective door frame that is attractive in appearance, durable, and not likely to be damaged by continuous use.
In the present invention, there is provided a door frame having a projecting door jamb that preferably extends about at least three and preferably four sides of the door opening. The door jamb is provided with a base and projecting lead core, with the projecting portion of the lead core extending normal to the base and generally parallel to the major plane of the door when the door is shut. The lead core is covered with a thin stainless steel frame, also having a projecting hat-shaped portion.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS The foregoing objects and advantages of the present invention will be more clearly understood when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is Ia cross-sectional, detailed View of a door frame taken at a locking means.
FIG. 2 is a perspective View of a radioactive material container embodying the present invention.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a continuous frame.
DETAILED' DESCRIPTION lReferring to FIG. 2, there is illustrated a container of the type generally used to contain and refrigerate radioactive material. This container is generally a rectangular box 1 having an outer door 2 and inner door 3. The outer door 2 may be made of any conventional material, such as 3,623,435 Patented Nov. 30, 1971 metal for example, and may match the side walls, bottom, top, and back of the container as illustrated. The interior of the container, as illustrated at 5 is lead coated on its rear, bottom, top, and side walls. In addition, the inner door 3, which may be provided as illustrated in FIG. l with an outer layer 7 of stainless steel, is also provided with an inner layer 8 of lead. A door frame generally illustrated at 9 is preferably provided at the top, bottom, and open side of the opening over which door 3 closes. This frame is secured to the side walls 12 and also to bottom and top of the container. The lead coating 13 on the inner surface of the container is provided at its outer periphery 14 with a double thickness layer of lead forming a projecting lip 15 that extends continuously along the bottom, side wall, and top of the door opening. This double thickness of lead is covered with a continuous frame 16 of stainless steel or some similar material. The frame 16 is provided with facing surfaces 17 and 18 that are designed to engage the inner surface of the lead liner 13. As illustrated in FIG. l, a reverse C-shaped steel portion of the Iframe is continuous with and intermediate facing portions 17 and 18, as illustrated at 20. This portion 20 engages and covers the lip 1S of the double thickness of lead to `form a continuous door jamb. The door 3 provVides a continuous overlap 21 between the lead layer 8 of door 3 and the double thickness of lead lip 15, thereby providing an optically opaque portion of the periphery of the door for preventing transmission from radioactive material. A conventional lock 25 secured on the door 3 is provided with a cam lock element 27 that is designed to engage the inner portion of door jamb 16.
Thus, the jamb functions as a striker plate for the cam lock on closing the door, as well as functioning as a protective cover and conventional door jamb.
The frame 16 may be suitably secured to the inner wall of the container by adhesive means, screws, or blind rivets. As illustrated in FIG. l, blind rivet 30 may be used. Also, the steel portion of the frame can be fabricated by an extrusion or metal forming technique.
What is claimed is:
1. A door frame for use with ya container for radioactive material wherein said container has a door and inner walls, each having a lead liner, said frame comprising a contniuous flange of lead extending inwardly along and protruding from the inner walls of said container and a frame of metal covering said lead flange and including side elements in facing relationship to said liner on either side of said tlange and an intermediate U-shaped channel integral and continuous With said side elements and in contact with said door when closed.
2. Apparatus as dened in claim 1 wherein said flange is rectangularly shaped in cross section and has a height greater than the distance between the edge of said door when in a closed position and the inner surface of said container.
3, Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said doorfurther includes a locking means mounted near one edge of said door, and adapted to communicate with one edge of said flange thereby causing intimate contact between said door and a second edge of said ilange when the locking means is actuated.
