UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' FRANCIS W. COLEMAN, OF RODNEY, MISSISSIPPI.
CARRIER FOR ASH-PANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,863, dated April 26, 188'].
Application filed January 10, 1887. Serial No. 223,905. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
' Be it known that I, FRANCIS W. COLEMAN, of Rodney, in the county of Jefferson and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Carrier for Ash-Pans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact des'criptiom My invention relates to a carrier for ashpans, and has for its object to provide a means whereby a pan of ashes may be conveniently and safely carried wherever desirable to empty the contents thereof without danger of spilling the hot cinders and ashes or burning or soiling the hands.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure of the drawing represents a perspective view of my device applied to a pan.
In carrying my invention into effect I provide a handle, A, of stout wire or equivalent material, made substantially in the shape of an inverted U, with the ends bent so as to somewhat approximate each other, having eyes a formed at their extremities. Inow provide two hooks, B B, each constructed of a single piece of the aforesaid stout wire passed through the eyes a of the handle, which wire is bent upon itself near its connection with the han dle, to form the twist b, from which point the two strands are extended downward with a more or less outward curve in opposite directions, forming thereby diverging shanksC C, which shanks have their extremities d d sharpened and curved inwardly and upwardly to constitute grips D D.
In operation the ash-pan may be drawn from may be carried any distance in a convenient mauner without danger of spilling or burning or soiling the hands.
The device may be fitted for use with pans of various sizes, as the reach of the handle may be shortened by bringing the eyes on together, thus adapting the hooks to receive a narrow pan; or the said reach may be greatly extended by pulling the eyes apart for use with wider pans.
While my invention is described in connection with ash-pans, it may be used with equal efiect to grasp and carry many other articles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a carrier for ash-pans, the combination, with the inverted-U-shaped wire handle A, having eyes a at the ends, of hooks B, hinged to said handle, each hook consisting of a wire bent upon itself to form a limited shank, and diverging outwardly-curved members C C, having their extremities D inwardly and upwardly curved and sharpened, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose herein set forth.
FRANCIS W. COLEMAN.
