Abstract

There is a circular base member having a centrally positioned upstanding spindle at its center, a slot extending in from the edge and to one side of the spindle and an upstanding flange at the periphery increasing in height from adjacent one side of the slot in the base to the other side of the slot thereby forming an inclined ramp on the top of the flange. Received on the spindle is a cage having a circular top with a central aperture received by the top end of the spindle in a formed fitting engagement. Depending from the circular top''s periphery are spaced apart spokes that extend inside of the upstanding flange on the base where two of the spokes are spaced apart to form a slot that can be brought into alignment with the slot in the base. The lower ends of the spokes are jointed by an arcuate member. The spindle and top have a passage for the reception of curling lotion. An enclosing cap having an open bottom is received over the assembled cage and base.

Received on the spindle is a cage having a circular top with a central aperture received by the top end of the spindle in a formed fitting engagement. Depending from the circular tops periphery are spaced apart spokes that extend inside of the upstanding flange on the base where two of the spokes are spaced apart to form a slot that can be broughtinto alignment with the slot in the base. The lower ends of the spokes are jointed by an arcuate member. The spindle and top have a passage for the reception of curling lotion. An enclosing cap having an open bottom is received over the assembled cage and base.

Heretofore, the procedure for frosting of the'hair has been carried out by applying a cap which has many spaced apart small apertures therethrough in the hair covered area of the cap. A hook is used to pull strands of hair through the small apertures in the cap. Bleach is applied to the pulled through strands while the rest of the hair is protected by the cap. When the strands are thoroughly saturated, an overcap is slipped on to hasten the action and keep the bleach moist while the bleaching is taking place. On completion of the bleaching, the hair is rinsed to removethe bleach, dried, and the desired color or tint or toner is applied followed by rinsing and setting.

It is an object of this invention to seal off thehair strands that are not to be bleached and to permit frosting strands to be bleached through their entire length.

Another object of the invention is to provide a curler that fits right at the scalp, permits a strand of hairto be wound from the scalp out and laid onto itself as wound and saturated with setting lotion from the inside as well as outside andhave a cover sealing cap received over the curler.

Throughout the description, like reference numbers refer to similar parts.

A base member is generally indicated at 10. It has a circular floor 11 formed with an arcuate slot 12 extendingin from an edge area to one side of the center of the floor from which there extends vertically upward an integral spindle 13. The spindle has a slot 14 extending down from its top end'where it has a sphericallike recess having an annular lip 15a. Extending vertically up from the periphery of the floor 11 is an integral arcuate flange 16 that extends from one edge of slot 12 at 16a to the opposite edge of the slot at 16b. The flange l6'gradually increases in vertical height from end 16a to end 16b and there is thereby fonned an inclined ramp 160 on the top of the flange.

Received for rotation on the spindle 13 of base is a cage generally indicated at 20. It has a circular top 21 with a central aperture 21a extending vertically therethrough and an integral spherical shaped bulb member 21b that is received within the sphericallike cavity in the top spindle 13 in a snap fit engagement. The bulb 2112 has a vertical aperture therethrough as shown in FIG. 5 that is in alignment with the slot 14 in the spindle to receive curling lotion therethrough from the top as applied as from a squeeze bottle. The top 21 has other apertures therein as at 21d for receiving curling lotion therethrough. Depending integrally from the periphery of the top 21 are spaced apart spokes 22, two of which at 22a and 22b are spaced apart a distance equal to the width of the slot 12 to form a slot 220 therebetween for the reception of a lock of hair to be curled and saturated with curling solution for setting. An arcuate member 23 integral with the bottom end of the spokes 22 completes the cage structure. The base, the cage and the cap to be described are all made of suitable plastic material that is impervious to the curling lotion and bleaching solution for the frosting operation. The bottom ends of the spokes 22 and their joining arcuate member 23 are received within the upstanding flange 16 of thebase member 10 as shown in the assembled showing in FIG. 5. It will be noted from the showing in FIG. 5 that the spindle 13 has a vertical cavity 13a fonned in its lower end during the molding of the base 10.

Received over the assembled cage 20 and base 10 from the top thereof is a covering or protective cap 25 having a lower open end 25a that is received with a friction fit on the outside wall surface 16d of flange 16. There is formed in the skirt of the bottom end of cap 25 oppositely disposed arcuate openings or voids 25b which serve as finger and thumb apertures for graspingand holding the base 10 when it is desired to remove the cap 25.

in FIG. 7 an alternative attachment of the cap 20 to the spindle top end 15 is shown. The spindle top end is as previously described and shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5. The cap 20 has a circular top end 26 shown fragmentally. There is an integral depending boss 260 formed with an annular recess 26b that has a snap fit as it receives the annular lip 15a on the top end of the spindle 13. A vertical passageway 260 extends down through the center of the'top '26 and its boss 26a and communic'ates' with theslot 14 in the spindle to receive curling solution as described above. Curling solution is also received between the spokes of the carriage to saturate a wound lock of hair.

in the operation, all the hair that is to be left unfrosted is rolled up on the curler. This is'accomplished by placing the cage 20 on the base 10 and snapping the cage 20 in position on the base with tiie'slot 220 in the cage aligned with slot 12 in the base.'With the curler thus assembled a hair strand is inserted into the slot 12 of the base and the slot 20 in the cage simultaneously. The cage 10 is then rotated in the direction of the arrows a distance great enough to cover slot 12 in the base with the arcuate member 23 of the cage. This action locks the hair inside the curler. The assembled curler is then placed and held on the scalp and rotated in the direction'of the arrows shown in FIG. 1. The lock of hair automatically sides on the ramp surface 16c on the top of the flange l6 and the next turn islaid on the subsequent turn. During the wrapping process,

the hair leaves the high point A on the ramp 16c at the end of a turn passes over the slot 12 in the base to approximately point B on the ramp 16- without hanging or tangling at 16a. The ramp 16c distributes the strand or lock of hair evenly along the spindle 13. There are no protrusions in the base and curler below the level of the hair slot 12 and this allows the base to set'firmly on the scalp and the hair is curled completely to the scalp.

A squeeze bottle containing curling lotion has its outlet firmly placed against the aperture 21a in the top and the curling lotion is forced downward and out through the slot 14 in the spindle l3 to'the inside of the curled hair from where it works outwardly. This insures complete saturation of the hair which is wrapped tightly around the upright spindle l3. Penetration of curling lotion cannot be obtained by placing lotion on the outside of a tightly wrapped strand of hair. It must be applied under light pressure and force through the hair to insure complete saturation. g

The covering cap 25 is applied to the cage 20 having the wound strand therewithin. The strands of hair that are to be bleached or frosted are left unrollcd and bleach is applied to them. This allows the frosting strands to be bleached throughout their entire length, from the tip ends all the way to the scalp. Contrasted with the pulling of strands of hair through small holes in a cap with a crochet hook which is very tedious and painful, this hair curler and frosting tool provides for fast, painless and easy operation.

What is claimed is:

l. A hair curler and frosting tool comprising, in combination,

a base member having a generally circular floor. having an arcuate slot extending in from an edge area to one side of the floor's center. an annular flange extending up from the periphery of the floor, a spindle integral with and extending vertically up from the center of said floor, said annular flange having a vertical height increasing from one side of the slot entrance to about three times that 5 height at the other side of the slot area thereby forming a ramp on top of said flange gradually inclining upwardly, said spindle having openings from its center to its outside at its upper portion, the top end of the spindle having attachment means for receiving a cage member having a passageway therethrough leading to said openings at the upper portion of the spindle,

said cage member being elongated and extending vertically and having a circular horizontally extending top with apertures therethrough, attachment means at the center cooperating with said attachment means on the top of the spindle of the base member and having a vertically extending passageway therethrough, spokes depending from the top and circumferentially spaced apart and received inside said flange of the base, two of said spokes forming a slot therebetween and an annular member starting at one of said slot forming spokes and joining the lower end of all the other spokes thereby leaving a slot in alignment with said slot in said cage through which is received a lock of hair, the cage on being rotated wraps the lock about the spindle as it rides upwardly along the top of said flange for a subsequent turn laid on top of the prior fonned turn of the lock of hair,

said passageway in the top and spindle receiving curling lotion therethrough to saturate the wound lock of hair, and 30 a covering cap having an open bottom end received over the top of said assembled cage on said base for protecting the curled lock from strands left unwound for application of a bleaching or frosting solution.

2. A hair curler and frosting tool according to claim 1 wherein said attachment means at the top end of the spindle is a spherical recess and the attachment means on the top of the cage is a bulblike member received by a snap fit in said spherical recess in the top of the spindle.

3. A hair curler and frosting tool according to claim 1 wherein said attachment means at the top end of the spindle is a recess having an overhanging lip at the top of the spindle and the attachment means on the top of the cage is a depending boss having an annular recess whereby the boss is received in the recess in the spindle top and the lip on the spindle top is received by a snap fit in said annular recess in the boss.

4. A hair curler and frosting tool according to claim 1 wherein said covering cap has its annular skirt at its open lower end frictionally held by the outside wall of the annular flange on the base.

5. A hair curler and frosting tool according to claim 4 wherein said skirt of the covering cap has oppositely disposed arcuate recesses extending in from the open lower end forming finger and thumb recesses to grasp and hold said base when removing said cap.

6. A hair curler and frosting tool according to claim 1 wherein said openings from the center to the outside at the upper portion of the spindle is a slot extending across said spindle downward from its upper open end.

Claims

1. A hair curler and frosting tool comprising, in combination, a base member having a generally circular floor, having an arcuate slot extending in from an edge area to one side of the floor''s center, an annular flange extending up from the periphery of the floor, a spindle integral with and extending vertically up from the center of said floor, said annular flange having a vertical height increasing from one side of the slot entrance to about three times that height at the other side of the slot area thereby forming a ramp on top of said flange gradually inclining upwardly, said spindle having openings from its center to its outside at its upper portion, the top end of the spindle having attachment means for receiving a cage member having a passageway therethrough leading to said openings at the upper portion of the spindle, said cage member being elongated and extending vertically and having a circular horizontally extending top with apertures therethrough, attachment means at the center cooperating with said attachment means on the top of the spindle of the base member and having a vertically extending passageway therethrough, spokes depending from the top and circumferentially spaced apart and received inside said flange of the base, two of said spokes forming a slot therebetween and an annular member starting at one of said slot forming spokes and joining the lower end of all the other spokes thereby leaving a slot in alignment with said slot in said cage through which is received a lock of hair, the cage on being rotated wraps the lock about the spindle as it rides upwardly along the top of said flange for a subsequent turn laid on top of the prior formed turn of the lock of hair, said passageway in the top and spindle receiving curling lotion therethrough to saturate the wound lock of hair, and a covering cap having an open bottom end received over the top of said assembled cage on said base for protecting the curled lock from strands left unwound for application of a bleaching or frosting solution.
