HAIR CURLER FOR THE EXECUTION OF PERMANENT WAVES AT ROOM TEMPERATURE Filed June 2, 1966 FIG 3 F76. 4
United States Patent 19,959 Int. Cl. A45d 1/06, 1/08, 1/10, 2/02, 2/06 U.S. Cl. 132-33 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hair curler having a base with a spindle on which is mounted a locking member for clamping a lock of hair between the base and the locking member, and a cage rotatably fitted on the locking member for winding of the free end of the clamped lock.
My invention has for its object a hair curler for the execution of permanent waves at room temperature, which hair curler is chiefly constituted by at least one of the following members:
A notched support provided with a carrier spindle;
A lock-clamping member fitted on said spindle and forming in its turn a pivot for a rotary curling cage.
My invention will be readily understood upon reading of the following description of a preferred embodiment given by way of exemplification and by no means in a limiting sense, said embodiment being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the support;
FIG. 2 is an elevation view of the lock clamping member;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the rotary cage;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the whole arrangement after assembly as ready for curling a lock of hair.
All the parts forming my hair curler are generally made of plastic material which allows a very easy assembly and dismantling.
As illustrated, the support 1 is constituted by a frustoconical fluted base element 2 in which is provided a broad slot 3 and to either side of the latter, marginal notches 4 and 5. The frusto-conical support carries, along its axis, a spindle 6.
A lock-clamping member 7 is constituted by a U- shaped element 8 projecting laterally and outwardly of a cylinder 9 in an axial plane thereof, said cylinder 9 being provided with four rows of blunt teeth 10 extending in parallelism with the axis of said cylinder; said cylinder is furthermore provided with a blind axial bore 11 by which the cylinder may be fitted over the spindle of the support. The cylinder terminates at its end opposed to the element 8 with a stud 12 carrying a knob 213.
The cage 14 illustrated in FIG. 3 is constituted by four loops 15 bent transversely at right angles at 16, rigid with a ring 17 and extending in radial planes of the latter. Said ring is provided with a central opening 18 the diameter of which matches that of the stud -12 on the cylinder 9.
The assembly of the hair curler is perfomned by fitting the lock clamping member 7 over the support 1 through the agency of the blind bore 11 engaging the spindle 6 after which the cage 14 is fitted over the lock clamping member 7 by inserting the opening 18 in the ring 17 over the stud 12 and elastically depressing the knob 13. The hair curler is then ready for use.
The U-shaped element 8 of the lock clamping member 7 is pivoted out of the slot 3 into one of the notches, e.g. notch 5 in FIG. 4 and the root end of a lock of hair is introduced into the slot 3 and into the gap 15! separating two successive loops 15 of the cage 14, which gap has been brought into registry with the slot 3 by an angular shifting of the cage 14.
The U-shaped element 8 of the lock-clamping member 7 is then angularly displaced from the notch 5 into registry with the notch 4 which causes tightening of the root end of the lock of hair between the element 8 and the support.
It is then sufiicient to turn the cage 14 in the desired direction around its axis so as to wind automatically the lock of hair, the root of which is held fast, around the cylinder 9 inside the cage 14. It is then possible to execute on said hair curler the usual permanent hair waving at room temperature. When these operations are completed, the lock is released by removing the U-shaped element 8 from the notch 4, after which the hair curler is dismantled by drawing out the cage 14.
The U-shaped element 8 of the link-clamping member 7 is then shifted angularly out of registry with the notch 5.
Obviously, the breadth of the slot 3 in the support and also the location of the notches 4 and 5 and the shape given to the body or bottom 20 of the support 41 are selected and calculated in a manner such as to hold in position an ordinary lock of hair without any exaggerated tightening thereof in a manner corresponding to the size of a hair curler; there are provided in practice four sizes of hair curlers. The lock of hair is then kept normally in its wound condition inside the cage *14 and is shaped freely inside the latter without being held fast by a tractional action exerted on the hair.
This allows the permanent wave liquid to act by a swelling of the hair and by no means by drawing out the wetteld hair, which would damage the hair and make it brittle. The lock of hair is not wound along a helical line, but the hair sections are superposed over each other in a flat condition which is preferable.
Lastly, it is essential to remark that the shaping of the hair is always performed starting *from its inner end or root towards the free end thereof, which allows, if required, executing the treatment only on the inner end of the look as provided by winding over the hair curler only the few first centimeters of the hair and leaving the remainder of the lock free.
It is thus possible to curl the hair as it grows without touching the section that has been already subjected toa predetermined permanent waving operation, which eliminates the risk of damaging the hair.
What I claim is:
1. A hair curler comprising a support having a central spindle, a cage rotatablymounted with respect to said support said cage including a ring and spaced parallel bar portions on said ring for the insertion of hair therebetween, and a hair clamping member comprising a cylinder having a blind bore receiving said spindle and rotatable thereon, a U-shaped laterally projecting element integral with said cylinder and rotatable therewith for cooperating with said support to clamp a lock of hair therebetween, and a stud on said cylinder at an end thereof opposite said blind bore, said ring of said cage being rotatably mounted on said stud with said bar portions encircling said cylinder to wind the clamped lock of hair as the cage is turned.
2. A curler as claimed in claim 1, wherein said support includes an annular base having a radial slot therein, said U-shaped element being movable in the vicinity of said slot to clamp said lock of hair which is introduced into said slot.
3. A curler as claimed in claim 2, wherein said bar portions are constituted as spaced loops.
4. A curler as claimed in claim 2, wherein said base has notches on either side of said slot, said U-shaped References Cited UNITED STATES PATENTS 2,625,941 1/1953 Harrington l3242 3,007,477 11/1961 Isbell 132-40 F. BARRY SHAY, Primary Examiner.
