METHOD OF ORNAMENTING CURTAlN-POLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,827, dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed December 16, 1886. Serial No. 221,728. (No model.)
corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 shows a piece of a curtain-pole made in accordance w1th my invention; and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line :0 :10 of Fig. 1.
A represents the wooden portion ofthe curtain-pole round in crosssection. This is first covered or sheathed with sheet metal, B, in the ordinary waythat is, by wrapping the metal in a plain state around the pole and inserting its edges in a small groove, a, in the pole. The surface of the sheathed poleis then ornamented by pressing a configuration, b, into the sheetmetal sheathing and wood. In this instance the pole is ornamented by spiral ribs or depressions extending around the pole, and these ribs or depressions are formed by passing the pole through a hollow revolving chuck having a point or tool to run in contact with the outer surface of the pole. This tool compresses the metal sheathing and also the wood, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and the metal, being practically non-elastic, retains the impressions. In
this manner the pole may be highly ornacovering through a hollow revolving chuck provided with a point or tool to run in contact with the metal for impressing spiral ornamentation therein and embedding the metal into the wood, substantially as described.
