MARKING AND GROOVING TOOL.

To all whom it may concern."

Be it known that 1, JOHN H. Pnooron, a citizen of the United States, residing in Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking and Grooving Tools, of which the following is a specification.

lily invention primarily relates to tools for marking and grooving imitation tile or hard wall plaster finish, and it consists in a tool so shaped and constructed that it may be used for marking and grooving in an easy and expeditious manner.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows my improved tool, and indicates how it is used for marking. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing how the tool may be used for making grooves when the grooves are relatively narrow and deep. Fig. 8 shows how the tool may be employed for making relatively shallow and wide grooves. Fig. 4 is a detail view, in section, of a part of a wall showing the kind of mark made by the tool. Fig. 5 is a similar view, showing the form of the groove produced by the tool when used as indicated in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a similar view, showing the form of the groove produced in the manner indicated in Fig. 3. Figs. 7, S- and 9 are sectional views on the lines 7-7, 8-8 and 99 of Fig. 3.

The tool A is made of one piece of metal, and preferably has a wooden handle B. The shank a is connected with the handle in the manner indicated in Fig. 3, and from the shank projects diagonally an arm 0 connecting with a grooving portion (1 of the cross section shown in Fig. 7. From the outer end of the grooving portion d extends an arm 6 approximately parallel with the arm 0 and from which extends outwardly and forwardly in a diagonal direction a marking finger which is beveled in the manner clearly indicated in Figs. 3 and 9.

For marking with this tool, the point or end of the finger is used, as indicated .in Fig. 1. Any straight edge may be used in connection with the tool for producing this mark. In order to form a relatively deep and relatively narrow groove, the edge of the portion 65 is employed, as indicatedin Fig. 2; but when a relatively wide and relatively shallow groove is desired, the tool is used as indicated in Fig. 3, and when so used the width of the groove may be varied by giving the proper inclination to the tool when being drawn along the mark.

This tool may be made of any desired size. It can be used either from the right or left, and the surface being marked ofi' is always in plain sight of the user. It clears the users hands from the wall upon which it is being used, and is of such shape as to make its use easy and comfortable.

I claim as my invention:

1. A marking and grooving tool, provided with a relatively long and narrow beveled grooving portion, an arm at the outer end of said grooving portion, and a tapered finger extending diagonally outward from the outer end of said arm having a pointed end with beveled edges.

2. A marking and grooving tool, having parallel arms and a straight beveled grooving portion connecting the arms, and a marking and grooving tapered finger eX- tending diagonally outward from the end of one of the arms and which has a pointed beveled end.
