UNITED STATES CARL REGHT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK:
PATENT OFFICE.
SHEET-METAL-PIPE JOINT.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,427, dated May 8, 1883.
' application filed July 29, 1882. (No model.)
' tions; and it consists, essentially,in inserting one piece of pipe into the other and forming simultaneously on both pieces a series of projections. This joint may be further improved by pressing down the projections formed as above stated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my joint. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on a larger scale than the previous figure. Fig. 3
is a similar section of my joint when the pro-- jections have been pressed down.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a sheetinetal pipe, the end of which is inserted into another pipe, B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. After the piece A has been thus inserted into the piece B,.I produce on both pieces simultaneously a series of projections, a. This object may be attained by a roller or other suitable tool, which will readily suggest itself to a skillful mechanic.
In'the example shown in the drawings the projections (I. extend outward; but, if desired, they may be made to extend inward. I prefer, however, to make the projections as shown in the drawings, since the same, if projecting outward, assume the form of blind rivets, thereby imparting to the joint a good appearance.
In order to improve the strength of my join t,
I press the projections 01. down, as shown in Fig. 3. For this purpose I introduce into the piece A a mandrel, of iron, closely fitting the pipe, and then I drive the projections a down by means of a punch, 0. (See Fig. 3.) By these means the interior of the joint is left nearly smooth, and the connection between the pieces A B is rendered very firm and durable.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The method herein described for uniting the ends of sheet-metal-pipe sections, which consists in inserting the end of one pipe-section into another, and thenforming simultaneously around both sections a series of projections which respectively interlock each other, substantially as set forth.
2. The method herein described of uniting the ends of sheet-metal-pipe sections, which consists in inserting the end of one section into another, then forming simultaneously around both sections a series of projections which re spectively interlock each other, and finally pressing down the projections, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the pipe-section A with the pipe-section B, one inserted within the other, and confined by means of a series of projections projecting laterally from both sections, and respectively interlocking with each other, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my-hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
W. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
