TRIMMING FOR HATS.
No. 361,756. PatentedApLZ6, 1887.
ll/VE a .1 BY
'ATTOR/VEYJ N. PETERS, Pholvlilhvgnphor. wmhin mn, D. c.
PATENT MARY FUCHS, OF CAMDEN, NE? JERSEY.
T RIMMING FOR HATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,756, dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed May 11, 1886. Serial No. 201,814. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known-that I, MARY Forms, of Gamden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimmings for Ladies Hats, of which the following is aspecification.
Ladies hats of all kinds are usually trimmed by means of ribbons, laces, feathers, flowers, &c., which are suitably grouped and fastened on the hat. The feathers, flowers, ribbons, laces, &c., have to be united separately to the hat, and if the purchaser is not suited the flowers, feathers, ribbons, &c., have to be detached and replaced by others, which is very tedious work and consumes much time, and as this must be repeated quite frequently until thepurchaser is suited, a considerable amount of valuable time is lost, and the hat-bodies are injured more or less, as are also the flowers, feathers, ribbons, &c., and frequently cannot be used again. Besides, a milliner must have in stock a large quantity of feathers, ribbons, flowers, &c., and hat-bodies, in orderto be able to suit the various tastes. I
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved hat-trimming which is complete in itself, and which can be readily detached from the hat-body or placed on the same without requiring the parts forming the said trimming to be disconnected and detached in any way or manner. I
The invention consists in asuitable backing or frame'adapted to the shape of the hat-body, on which backing or frame the ribbons, feathers, flowers, and other ornaments are secured, which frame or backing is then placed on the hat-body and fastened by means of stitches or.
otherwise. The frame or backing is made adjustable, so as to fit hats of various sizes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat provided with my improved trimming. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the trimming. Fig. 3 isa horizontal sectional view of the hat and trimming, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of thetrimming.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The feathers A, ribbons B, ornaments C, or, if desired, also flowers, lace, stuffed birds, or other hatornaments are suitably grouped and are fastened on a backing or frame, D, made of pasteboard, sized fabric, wire, or any suitable material. Said backing or frame is provided with a band, F, the outside of which is covered with velvet, silk, or any other material, to have the appearance of the band usually passed around the crown of the hat-body. Said band may form one continuous piece, or it may be open at one end and have said end connected with the main frame by means of .an elastic band, so as to adapt said band to fit hats of different sizes. I have shown my improved detachable hat-trimming on a highcrowned hat; but it may also be applied to a capote hat, or Gainsborough, or other hats, the shape of the backing and band being altered according to the shape of the hat-body.
The trimming may be used on straw, felt, plush, or wire, or any other hat-bodies.
The main advantages of my improved detachable hat-trimming are the following: If a lady buys a certain hat and she likes the trimming, but the size and shape of the hat-body do not suit her, and she wishes the same trimming on a larger hat more to her taste, the trimming can be removed and placed on the hat body of her selection. The same is the case if the hat-body suits the lady and she wishes to have another trimming on the same.
A millincr need only have on hand a certain number of hat bodies and trimming, and can easily adjust and fit them on any hat-body with little expense and labor.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A detachable hat-trimming for ladies and childrenshats, consisting of a backing or frame fitting on the outside of the upwardly-projecting part or body of the hat and projecting upward from the rim, feathers, flowers, ribbons, lace, and other ornaments suitably grouped and fastened on said backing or frame, and an ornamental band forming part of the backing or frame, substantially as shown and described.
2. A detachable trimming for ladies or childrens hats, consisting of feathers or flowers, ribbons, lace, or other ornaments usually employed for trimming ladies hats, suitably grouped and fastened on a backing or frame provided with a band which can be passed around the crown or body of the hat, said band In testimony that I claim the foregoing as being made extensible, substantially as shown my invention I have signed my name 1n presand described. ence of two subscribing witnesses.
3. The combination, with a group of flow- 5 ers, feathers, ribb0ns,-1ace, or other ornaments MARY FUCHS.
used on ladies hats, of a backing or frame on which they are fastened, and a band having one Witnesses:
end fastened to the backing and the other end JAMES M. CASSADY,
connected to the backing by elastic pieces, sub- T. F. BOARDMAN. 1o stantially as shown and described.
