UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN L. BEARDEN, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
KITCHEN= CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,667, dated April 26 1887.
Application filed August 25, 1885. Serial No. 175,274. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN L. BEARDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county'of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the combination of a mold-board and flour chest, the object of which is to provide a cheap, simple, durable, and convenient device for holding flour, meal, and other culinary articles, and at the same time one that will serve as a shelf or mold-board when desired. These objects I attain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device open ready for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device closed.
A is a chest or box having drawers in its lower part. Said drawers are provided with suitable flanges, so as to fit close against the chest, and thus make a tight 'joint. The drawer a is preferably made of sufficient ca pacity to hold one hundred pounds of flour. Said drawer is provided with a suitable handle or knob, a", for drawing it out when it is desired to clean, empty, or fill the drawer.
(0 a are small drawers, and are preferably made was to hold about fifty pounds of flour or meal each, and are each provided with a handle or knob, a a, so as to draw them out when desired.
B is a mold-board, which serves as a door when turned up against the upper part of the chest or box. Said mold-board is provided with projecting end pieces, I) b, to hold the flour upon the same. The board Bis also provided with suitable hinges, Z), for hinging it to the cross-piece e E E are suitable supports pivoted to the ends and near the outer edges of the moldboard, thelower part of the same being pivoted to the ends of arms F, said arms being pivoted near the middle and lower ends of the two parts.
0 is a partition dividing the lower and upper part of the chest, the front part of whlch is hinged so as to swing back and permlt the contents of the drawers a and a to be taken out above the board.
D is a partition placed at any desired dlstance above the partition 0, leaving a space which may be used for any desired purpose, and is provided with the cross-partitions d, 01, d d d, and disc as to form partltlons for the drawers M, G, H, I, J, K, and L. Sald drawers are for the purpose of holding spices, sugars, and the like. Each drawer is provided with a suitable handle or knob. These drawers are closed inside of the chest by the mold-board B, so as to prevent insects from getting at their contents.
The chest A is provided with a suitable top, ends, sides, and bottom. so as to make t insect-tight when closed. The front side is preferably made beveling upwardand backward from the top of the cross-piece a to the point where the top of the door or mold-board strikes the side of the chest. The partition N is to divide the lower part of the chest into Said partition preferably extends from the bottom of the chest to the partition 0, and from the front to the rear of the chest, so as to prevent the contents of the different parts mixing.
O is a partiton running parallel with the bottom of the chest and extends from the end I? to the partition N, and serves as a support to the drawer a.
I am aware of the construction shown in Letters Patent No. 327,801, kitchen-cabinet, and make no claim thereto.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- r The combination, with a flour-chest, A, and swinging mold-board B, provided with end pieces, I) b, of supports E E, hinged to the moldboard, and arms F F, pivoted to the chest and to the supports, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
JONATHAN L. BEARDEN.
