Description

(No Model.)
O. W. BEEH LER.
BOX FASTENER. No. 361,574. I Patented Apr. 19, 1887.
main! UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES \V. BEEHLER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONFFHALF 'IO CHARLES SUEME, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,574, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed February 4, 1887. Serial No. 226,574. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
' Be it known that I, CHARLES WV. BEEHLER, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful 5 Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- 1 Figure I is a perspective view of a box provided with my improved fastener. Fig. II is a perspective view of the fastener removed. Fig. III is a detail vertical section of a box with the fastener applied, this section'being taken on line III III, Fig. V. Fig. IV is a detail top View of a box-lid, showing the fastener turned to release the lid. Fig. V is a similar view showing the fastener turned to secure the lid on the box. Fig. VI is a trans- 0 verse section taken on line VI VI, Fig. III. Figs. VII and VIII illustrate a modification.
.My invention relates to an improved fastening intended for boxes for different uses; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed outin the claims.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the box, and 2 the lid.
3 represents an L-shaped rod, 4 being the head of therod. This rod is preferably secured to the interior of the box by means of a plate or bracket, 5, formed with a recess or groove, 6, to receive the rod, and a groove or depression, 7, to receive ahead, 8, on the lower 5 end of the rod. The plate is secured to the interior of the box by screws or bolts 20, and holds the rod from either vertical or horizontal movement, it not only holding the rod from moving upward, but also from moving down- 49 ward, in case a blow should come upon it, so that it is not liable to tighten on the lid, so as to be easily moved.
As a modification of the head 8 and groove 7 in the bracket, the box may be recessed, as shown at 9, Figs. VII and VIII, to receive the lower end, 10, of the rod, which in this case would be bent to form an L on its lower end.
The slots 9 are made by simply sawing through the end of the box at the place where the end 10 would be. 5o
The lid of the box has a slot, 11, through which the end 4. of the fastening passes, and by turning the fastening after it enters the slot a quarter way round it will be understood that the lid will be secured to the box.
I prefer to secure a plate, 12, on the box, to form a bearing for the head 4 of the rod, this plate having a slot, 13, to receive the end of the rod.
To provide a means for placing a seal on the fastening, I form a perforation, 14, in the head of the rod and form a perforation, 15, in 9.- lug, 16, on the plate 12. When the rod is i turned to fasten the lid, it comes against this lug 16, and by passing the wire 17 through the perforations and securing a seal, 18, thereto it will be seen that the head of the rod will be fastened to the lug. and cannot be turned until the seal is removed.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a box-fastener, in combination with the box and lid, the L-shaped rod 3, having a head, 8, and bracket 5, having grooves 6 7, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a box-fastener, in combination with the box and lid, the rod 3, having head 4., plate 12, having slot 11, of size sufficient to admit the passage of the head of the rod, and lug 16 on the plate, the head of the rodand lug being perforated to receive a'seal, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a box-fastener, in combination with the box and lid, the L-shaped rod having a perforation in its upper end, perforated lug, plate on which the lug is secured, and bracket 85, 5, the bracket having grooves (3 7 to receive the rod, and a head on the lower end of the rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES \V. BEEHLE It.
