DEVICE FOR SHARPENING SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,485, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed May 29, 1886.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN W. BOUGHTON, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, and J. MILTON SNIDOW, of Big Stony Creek, in the county of Giles and State of Virginia, both citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Guides for Saw Sharpeners, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations, partly sectional, of a guide for a saw-sharpener embodying our invention. Fig. 3 represents a top view thereof, and Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a detached portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. I
Our invention consists of a guide for a sawsharpener so constructed that the filing or sharpening operation may be performed true and conveniently.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an arm, which is provided with a clamping device, B, whereby said arm may be connected with the frame of a sawing-machine or other support in relation to the saw to be sharpened.
Formed with the upper end of the arm A are bosses G 0, within which is fitted a vertically-arranged screw-rod, D, whose upper end has formed with or secured to it bosses E, within which is fitted a horizontally-arranged screw-rod, F.
The screw-rod D is formed with a longitudinally-extending groove, G, to receive the point or end of a screw, H, which is fitted to one of the bosses C, forming a feather-connection, so that the rod may be raised and lowered and prevented from rotating. A nut, J, is fitted on the rod D, between the bosses 0, whereby it is held in position, and by its rotation the rod D receives vertical motion.
The screw-rod F is formedwith a longitudior end of a screw, L, which is fitted to one of the bosses E, forming a feather-connection, so that said rod F may be moved laterally or horizontally and prevented from rotation. A nut, M, is fitted on therod F, between the bosses E, whereby it is held in position, and by its rotation the rod F receives lateral motion.
Serial No. 203,627. (No model.)
At one end of the rod F is an eye,N,through which is passed a file-holder, P, the same con sisting of a rod or bar having at one end a socket, Q, to receive the point or front end of a file, said socket having screws R, for firmly clamping the file to the holder.
The rods D F are provided, respectively, with jam-nuts S T, which tighten against the adjacent bosses for holding said rods firmly in position.
An arm, U, having an eye, U, at one end, is horizontally mounted on the vertical rod D, between the head and the upper boss 0. This arm may be raised or lowered on the said rod, 6
and is secured in position by the screw V. The outer end of the said arm is adapted to bear against the saw while the latter is being sharpened, aiding in holding the same in a fixed or steady position, so as to lessen the vi- 7: brations thereof.
\ The operation is as follows: The nuts J M are rotated until the file is in proper position relatively to the saw to be sharpened, and in order to make the adjustment of the file true we use a proper square or implement, (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1,) and when said adjustment is accomplished the nuts S T are tightened, after which the saw may be filed or sharpened by the operation of the file, the latter being grasped by the handle and operated uniformly and expeditiously, owing to the guiding and sustaining action of the file-holder P in the eye N.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A guide for a saw-sharpener, having the rod D vertically adjustable on the supportingarm A, and provided with the file-holder 1, all of said parts being combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A guide for a saw-sharpener, having the vertically-adjustable rod D, the horizontallyadjustable rod F,supported by said vertical rod D, and the file-holder. P, supported by said horizontal rod F, all of said parts being combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3- A guide fora saw-sharpener, consisting of 100 the arm A, provided with the clamping de-' vice B, the rod D,vertically adjustable in bosses Got the arm A, the rod F, horizontally adj ustable in bosses E of the rod D, and the file-holder I, supported by said horizontal rod, all of said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a guide for a sawsharpener, the arm A, with clamping device 13 and bosses O, in I combination with the screwrod D, having groove G, the nut J on rod D, between the bosses C, screw H, inserted in boss 0 and having its point in groove G, the horizontally-adjustable rod F, sustained in bosses E of rod D, and holder P, with socket 0, all substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
5. A guide for a saw-sharpener, consisting of the arm A, having clamping device B, the serew rod D, sustained by said arm A and vertically adjustable thereon, the horizontal ad juslable rod F, supported by said rod D and provided at one end with the eye N, and the file-holder P, passing through said eye N and having asoeket, 0, all of said parts being combined substantially as described.
6. A guide for a saw-sharpener, having the arm A, with clamping device B, the vertical rod D, supported by said arm A, means, substantiall y as described, for vertically adjusting said rod D, the horizontal rod F, supported by said vertical rod D and having means, substantially as described, fol-lateral adjustment, and the arm V, vertically adjustably secured to said rod D, all of said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a guide for a sawsharpener, the horizontal arm V, vertically adjustably attached to the vertical adjustable rod D and having its outer end adapted to bear against the saw while the same is being ground, all combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. In a guide for a saw-sharpener, the horizontal arm V, vertically adjustably attached to said guide and havingits outer end adapted to bear against the saw while the same is being ground, all substantially as described.
9. A guide for a saw-sharpener, having the file-holder P, laterally adj ustable and provided with a socket, all of said parts combined substantially as described.
10. In a guide for a saw-sharpener, the arm A, having clamping device 13, in combination with the rod D, vertically adjustable on said arm A, and the horizontal arm V, vertically adjustable on said rod D and having its outer end adapted to bear against the saw While the same is being ground, all substantially as described.
