DVIPROVEIVEENT IN SAW-FILING- MACHINES.

Be it known that I, G. G. MILLER, of Brattleborough,
in the county of Windham, and State of Vermont, have 5 drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- .Figure 1, Sheet I, represents a plan, or top view of Vmy improved saw-ler and jointer.
Figure 2, Sheet I, is a vertical longitudinal section ofthe same, taken on the plane of the line x x, lig. l.'
Figure 3, Sheet II, is a front elevation, partly in section, of the same.
Figure 4, Sheet II, is a detail longitudinal section of the working-parts of the same, representing them in position for jointing.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new apparatus for filing and jointing circular saws, and. has for its object to produce an instrument which can be adjusted to all kinds ofsaws in |any suitable position, and for files of suitable length.
The invention consists, first, in so arranging adjustable clamps that files of any desired length can be se cured therein, and so that they can be turned at any angle, tosuit the shape and position of the saw-teeth.
The invention consists, secondly, in the application of a spring, by which the pivoted frame which holds the le is swung up, so that the tile is thus automatically pressed against the saw-tooth.
The invention consists, thirdly, in arranging, on the tixed frame of the instrument, an adjustable sliding frame, for clamping the saw, said adjustable frame serving to clamp saws of all sizes in any desired position.
The invention consists, fourthly, in pra. viding, on the aforesaid Exed frame, for holding .the ijle so that it can slide on the said xed frame, to enable the le on a pivoted frame to reach to the teeth of large or small saws placed onthe same mandrel.
Theinventlon consists, ifthly, in providing a setscrew on the swinging file-frame, and a slotted arm on the sliding support ofthe same, so that the {ile-frame can be clamped in any desired position7 to have all teeth led exactlylalike, and also to 'keep the iile away from the saw-blade,-while the same is being turned.
The invention finally consists in so attaching the le in swivelled extension-holders, that are fitted into a support, swivelled to the frame, which is pivotevd to a sliding bed,`that the file can be swung on its own axis in any other desired direction, to impart to the cuttingi edges of the teeth-any desired inclination, or slant.
A, in the drawing, represents a cast-iron, 'or other Jlate, or bed, made iu the shape of a cross, or otherwise, so that it will form a rm support for the other part of the machine. l l The bed A is provided with a longitudinal groove, a, in which two 'carriages B and C` are fitted, said carriages beingprovided with set-screws b c, respectively, or-with other equivalent devices for clamping them in any desired position to the bed A. t To the front carriage B are pivoted, by a pin, two
arms d d, in an inclined direction, said arms having screws e e fitted through their ends, so that -they can straddle a saw-blade and clamp the same, as is clearly shown in figs. 2 and 4.
The rear carriage O has projecting lugs, or ears fj', to which, by means ot a pin, g, a frame, D, is pivoted. The frame D projects forward of the lugs, and .is held up by a spring, E, which is curved, or L-shaped, and l which is fastened to the carriage O with `its rear end,
as shown.
The front end of the spring is turned up and slotted, and fits against a cross-bar, h, of the frame D,to which .v sired position.
When the spring is thus hold up the frame D, and still allow it to be pressed down. f A The frame D may, however,'be also rigidly locked to the carriage() by means of a set-screw, i,.which secures it to a slotted extension, k, of the carriage O, as shown in iig. 2.
The front end of the frame D carries a plate, l, to which, by means of a pin, m, a bar, F, is swivelled, so that said bar can be freely swung on the swivel-pin m. The latter may he made a screw, or may carry a nut, so that the bar can be looked in any desired horizontal or inclined position in front of the frame D.
The bar F has in its front face a dovetail groove, to receive a slotted slide bar, G, which can be freely moved backand forth in the said dovetail groove. j
From the ends of the bar G project forward two arms n, o, of which, one, o, is, by a bolt or screw, p, fastened to the slotted bar, so that it can be adjusted on the bar at will.
By thus having one arm o adjustable on the bar G, the distance between the two arms can be varied at will.
0n the front end of each arm n, o, is formed a tubupin, s, pivoted to said arm, so that it can swing thereon. The tube r, ou the arm n, however, is fastened to the same by means of a screw, or bolt, t, fitting through a slot of the arm n.
Through each tube r is itted a swivel-pin, H, which :is/.provided with a handle, u, on the outer, and with a jaw, v, on the inner end.
The file I is'tted with its ends into the javssv of it maybe secured, by means of a set-screw, t, in any defastened, it will serve to' lar socket, fr; the one on the arm o is, by a screw, or
the swivel-pins H, and can be of suitable length, -as the arm o can be adjusted for that purpose.
By turning the swivel-pins H in the tubes r, the file can .be set with its upper surface horizontal, as in fig. 2, or inclined, as in lig. 4, for filing or jointing saws, as may be desired. f
By means of yscrews w w, fitted into the tubes r, the file can be clamped in such position.
The file can also be swung on the pivot s, with the pin t travelling in the slot of the arm u, when the file is to be withdrawn from the'saw.
When the bevel ofthe saw-teeth is tovbe determined, the bar F is swung on its pivot m, and clamped.
When the apparatus is in operation, the spring E presses the le up against thel edge of the saw-teeth, and causesthe requisite power to be applied to the lile vertically, while the same is being drawn back and forth kin the groove-bar F.- p The saw is clamped by the screws of the carriage B, which can be adjustedto suit saws of all kinds and sizes. The carriage O can also be adjusted for suiting the postion of the saw, and the frame D can be locked in any desired position, either rigidly, by the screw j, or with the spring E, by the screw i.
This apparatus Will'be ofgreat conveniencefor filing all kinds of circular saws, and can be attached to the saw-ame'so as not to necessitate the removal of the saw for sharpening.
Having thus described my invention,
What T claim as new, and desire to secure 'by Let' ters Paten is- V 1. The extension-arm o, fitted on the sliding bar G, which has thn lixed arm n, in combination with the tube-sockets rr on the arms 'n o, and with the swivelpins H, for holding the file, all arranged so that a iile of suitable length can be secured, and that the same can be turned on the axis of the pins H, and locked by the screw w, substantially as specified.
A2. The spring E, when arranged as described, to keep the frame D elevated, so that it will hold thele against the tooth to be sharpened, as specified.
3". Providing a slot in the `spring E, so that it may, by a screw, t', or its equivalent, be locked to the pivoted frame D, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
4. The jointed sliding frame B, carryingthe arms d saws of all sizes and in suitable positions, as set forth. 5. The sliding frame O, carrying the pivoted frame D, that supports the sliding file-holder, when arranged so that it can vbe longitudinally adjusted on the bedplate A, substantially as and for they purpose herein shown and described.
6. The screw j, fitted through the slotted extension sired position, as specified, for the purpose set forth.
