ALEXANDER MCL. (JRAVF ORD, OF CAMPBELL HALL, NEV YORK.
CONCEALED FLUSH HlNGE.
SPECIFICATION fori/ning part of Letters Patent o. 361,268, dated April 19, 1881.
Application filed January 12, 1887. Serial No.4 224,090. (No model.) y
To all wwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MCL. CRAWFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Campbell Hall, in the county of Orange and Statel of New York, have invented a new and useful Concealed or Flush .Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my new and improved hinge is to allow the edges of the hinged articles to which it is attached to lit snugly up to each other, and thc surfaces thus connected to be perfectly smooth, the hinge being entirely hidden; and it is especially applicable to pianolids, desktops, card-tables, and other articles having hinged parts in which polish and smoothness unobstructed by projecting hinges are desired. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a piano-lid, the dotted linesC G showing the position of my concealed or lush hinge when the piano-lid is closed. Fig. 2 is a section of my improved hinge, on the line x a' ot' Fig. 3, open. Fig. 3 is a section of Iny improved hinge, on the line y y of Fig. 2, closed. Fig. 4 is a section of my improved hinge, on the line y y of Fig. 2, open. Fig. 5 is a front View of my improved hinge open, similar letters being used for similar parts throughout.
My concealed or flush hinge, which may be made of steel, iron, or any suitable metal or material, consists of three ilat rectangular pieces, D D g, Figs. 2, 3, and 4, of different lengths, b'ut of 'the same width and thickness, the ends 'of the piece g being square-dove tailed or box-dovetailed into one end of each of the pieces D and D', and held inplace by and turning upon pins ff through the dovetailing, and to allow such turning it is'necessarythat the upper ends of the dovetailing of the pieces D D' g be slightly rounded oft', lwhile the under ends of the dovetailing of the pieces must be square and true. The piece D is longer than veither ot the other two pieces, and is set into a case, C, and can be drawn outward and pushed inward in the ease C to v a distance regulated by a slot, e, in each side of the case O and a pin, el, xed in each side of the piece D, working in the slot c. This slot c must correspond in length with the piece g, and the case C mustbe sufficiently` long to allow the piece D to be drawn outward or pushed inward the length of the slot e. The case C, with the inclosedpiece D, is mortised into one portion, A, of the piano-lid or other article, and the piece D is correspondingly niortised into the portion Bof the piano-lid or other article, both pieces being held in place by screws through the raised faceplatesCC. The position of my hinge is then represented-'by Figs. 1 and 3, the pianolid being closed.
To open the piano, the portion B of the piano-lid is drawn forward the length of the slot c in. the sideof the case C, when the hinge will b`e in the position represented by Fig.A 2. It is then only necessary to raise the portion B and lay it overupon the portion A, this being allowed by the rounding off of the upper ends of the dovetailing of D and D g, the hinge then being in the position represented by Figs. 4' and 5. ATo close the piano-lid or other article, the operation is reversed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, 1s-
A hinge consisting of three tlat rectangular1 pieces of the saine width and thickness, but of different lengths, the ends of one of these pieces being square-dcvetailed or box-dovetailed into one end of each of the other two pieces, and held in place by and turning upon pins, the largest rectangular piece being set into a case, and capable of being drawn outward and pushed inward in the case to a distance regulated by a slot in each side of the case, and a pin fixed in each side of the rectangular piece working in the slot, all substantially as set forth.
A. MCL. ORAVFORD.
