IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,122, dated August 5, 1862.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LORENZ WOLF, of the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows. I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makingpart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a left or land-side elevation. Fig. 2 is a right elevation. Fig. 3 is an under side view of the box. Fig. 4- is a transverse section at the line X X.

' My invention consists in a novel method of ironing the plow, the frame being made in the usual manner.

To enable any one skilled in the arts to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation thereof.

1n the drawings, Arepresents an iron strap bolted to the under side of the plow-beam B, with a curved end, a,to which the team is applied by means of the ring I), the object being to prevent the clevis from unhooking. This strap is connected at the other end to the plate 0, which plate is fitted to the under side of the plow-beam, and the plate and beam have a mortise cut through them, into which the standard D is made to fit accurately against the sides of the mortise in the plate 0, but not against the ends thereof, nor against thesides of the beam. On loosening the wedge c the standard D may be raised or lowered by means of the key E, the top of which has graduated notches in it for that purpose, thereby elevating or depressing the point of the plow at will. The standard D is secured in the plow-beam by means of the key E and the wedge 0, ap-

plied as shown.

The box F is of cast-iron, three inches by three, with a flange on each side, strengthened by the brace d, which crosses from one flange to the other. Between this brace and the top of the box F the plate 0 works. Through each flange is a smooth hole, in which the screw G revolves. The box is secured to the plow-beam by a vertical bolt.

To the back end of the plate 0 the lug e is riveted, working in the box F with the screw G. Through this lug a hole is bored and a right-hand screw-thread out to receive the screw which carries the back end of the plate.

0 either to the right or left, and as the sides of the standard D fit in said plate, the point of the plow must of course be affected whenever the position of the plate is changed.

The mold-board H and landside I are made in one piece, and are braced by means of brace f, and are bolted to the heel of the plow-tail and to the standard Dby means of loose bolts and thelugo, which is fixed to the inside of the mold-board. The standard D must be made straight and fixed directly in the center of the beam and in front of the heel of the tail, so that a right or lefthand mold-board can be applied without difficulty.

A recessis made in the edge of the plow share and landside I to receive the sod-cutter J, which is secured to the landside byascrewbolt. When the sod-cutter is not wanted it can be taken out and a piece of iron the size of the recess secured in its place by means of the same screw-bolt, thus making the landside flush.-

The subsoil-plow K is attached to the heel of the landside by a screw-bolt and steady-pin. So much of this specification as relates to the iron box F, the placing said box under the beam, thereby giving additional strength to the beam, and the working in said box of the plate G, the screw G, and the lug e, in connection with the standard D, the plow-beam, and plowshare, is an improvement on the original invention of your applicant, LORENZ WOLF, as described in Letters Patent granted to him, and bearing date of January 15, 1861.

Having thus described the construction and operation of my improvements in plows, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is=
