Description

UNITED STATES LEMAN C. MINER, JR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PATENT OFFICE. Q
CIGAR-PERFORATOR.
SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No, 361,071, dated April 12, 1887.
Application filed January 13, 1887. Serial No. 224,263.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEMAN O. MINER, J r. of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gigar-Perforator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to devices designed for use in the perforating of cigarsthat is,to an instrument whereby a needle or puncturer may be forced up through'the tip and within the body of the cigar, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed outin the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
.Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved cigar-perforator. Fig. 2 is acrosssectional elevation taken on the line a; m of Fig. 1, the parts being in the position indicated in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
In the drawings, 10 represents a case in the top of which there is formed a concave recess, 11, which recess is centrally apertured, as shown at 2, to provide for the passage of a puncturingneedle, 12, which is guided in an aperture that is formed in a block, 13, which block is rigidly connected to or made inte- 0 gral with the casing 10. At the opposite side of the casing 10 there is mounted a bell-crank lever, 14, one arm of which extends upward through a slot, 3, that is formed in the top of the casing 10, while the other arm of thelever 5 extends across the case to a position so that it may be conveniently connected with the lower end of the shank of the needle or puncturer,
12 by means of a link, such as that shown at 15. A spring is arranged in connection with 0 the lever 14, the purpose of which is to hold the parts in the positions in which they are shown in full lines in Fig. 1, such spring being shown in the drawings at 16, and represented as being connected at one end with the lever 14 and at the other with a stud, 17.
A knife or cutter, 18, is pivotally connected to the block 13, projecting upward in a vertical plane to a point just beneath the recess 11, at which point the knife is bent over at so right angles, so that it may be drawn across the aperture 2, the knife being connected to the lever 14 by means of a link, 19.
Such being the general construction of my (ModeL) cigar-perforator, the operation is as follows: The-tip of the cigar is inserted within the recess 11. The lever 14 is then thrown in the direction of the arrow shown in connection therewith in Fig. 1, and, being so thrown, will act to draw the knife 12 across the aperture 2, and as the knife is so drawn the tip of the cigar will be cut or severed from the body of the cigar, and just as the knife has passed the aperture 2 the puncturer or needle 12 will pass upward'through the said aperture and into the body of the cigar, making a passage -or 6 draft-flue in said body, and thereby insuring a free draft or suction.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cigar-perforator, the combination, with a slotted and apertured casing, of a needle working in guides in the casing and a spring-actuated bell-crank lever having one of its arms projecting through the casing and its other arm connected to the needle, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a cigar-perforator, thevcombination, with a slotted and apertured casing, of a needle working in guides in the casing,a bellcrank leverhaving one arm projecting through the slot of the casing, alink pivoted to theinner arm of the bell-crank lever and the needle, and a spring connected to the casing and one arm of the bell-crank lever, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a cigar-perforator, the combination, with an apertured casing, a needle working in guidesin the casing, and a lever for operating the needle, of apivoted knife and a connection between said needleoperating lever and knife, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a cigar-perforator, the combination, with a slotted and apertured casing, a guideblock in the casing, a needle working in the block, and a spring-actuated bell-crank lever, and alink connecting the lever to the needle, of a knife pivoted to the guide-block and a link connecting the knife to one arm of the bell-crank-lever, substantially as herein shown and described.
