UNITED STATES PATENT (DEEICE.
HABLAN E. HINMAN, or RAVENNA, oHIo.
BUTTER-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,062, dated April 12, 1887.
i l Application filed March 5, 1887. Serial No. 229,794. (No model.) Y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARLAN E. HINMAN, of Ravenna, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Butter-Jar, of which the'following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to jars or packages intended more especially for packing butter for storage or shipment or While being used; and the invention has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efcient device of this character.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts u of the butter j ar or package, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts in all the figures.
Figure I is a side elevation of my improved butter-jar. Fig. 2 isa central vertical sectional elevation of the jar, and Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.
lThe butter-jarl consists, mainly, of a cylinder or tube, A, made, preferably, of glass, and preferably straight and smooth from end to end at the inside, and two end caps or covers, B C, which are fitted tothe outside of the tube A, and are adapted to press on packings D D, placed at the ends` of the tube, to make airtightjoints.
An outer clampframe, consisting of bottom and top cross-pieces, E F, and side pieces, G G, is made to receive the cylinder with its caps on it, and in the top cross-piece, F, there is fitted a screw, H, which may be screwed down hard upon the cap B, to press together both end caps, B C, and draw their packings D D tightly to the ends of the tube A, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
The clamp-frame may be made of any materials having requisite strengthV for the purpose. I showA the top and bottom pieces, E F, made of Wood and the side pieces, G G, made of a metal strap in one piece, bent under the bottom strip and fastened at its extremities 'g g to the top piece, F.
Within the tube A one or two plungers, I, are placed, two being shown, and the inner faces of these plungers, next the butter J between them in the tube, may be cut or formed with any desired designs, either sunken or in relief, to imprint the butter as or before it is removed for use.
It is obvious that when the screw H is loosened and the tube A is removed from the clamp-frame, and both end caps, B C, are re moved from the tube a wooden pin may be ypressed against either of the plungers to force the butter from the opposite end of the tube in any quantity required for use, and the butter projecting from the tube will have smooth true sides, and may be cut off easily byaknife passed closely to the end of the tube. Butter not used may also be very quickly replaced in the tube.
The tubes A may be made either round, square, or polygonal in cross-section, and of any desired size to hold a given quantity of butter-one, two, three, or ve pounds, or moreand thus obviate the necessity of weighing the butter in selling it, and the names of the producers of the butter may be stamped or blown or otherwise marked on the tubes for the convenience of buyers preferring butter made by any particular dairyman. Furthermore, the jar not only makes a convenient package to handle, but allows the butter to bc cooled by putting the jar in cold water or on ice; and, finally, the butter may be preserved fresh and sweet in the jars for a long time without becoming tainted by deleterious gases or other air impurities, as when packed in open or porous vessels, it being the intention to make the tubes of glass, through which the color or quality of the butter may be seen but any other suitable material may be used for making the tubes.
The herein-described jar or package may be used for putting up other produce besides butter, as will readily be understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A butter jar or package comprising a tube open at both ends, caps or covers fitted to each end of the tube, and a clamp-frame adapted to press the covers to the ends ofthe tubes, substantially as shown and described.
end of the tube, packings interposed between the ends of the tube and the caps, and a clampframe adapted to press the opposite packings and covers to the ends'of the tube, substantielly as shown and described.
3. A butter jar or package comprising a. tube open at both ends and straight and smooth at the inside for its Whole length, a plunger or plungers fitted therein, caps or covers fitted to opposite ends of the tube, and a clamp-frame adapted to press the caps or packings therein to the ends of the tube, substantially es shown and described.
4. The combination, in a. butter jar or puckage, of a tube, A, caps or covers B C, tted to I 5 E F, side pieces, Gr G, and a clamp-screw, H, 2o
substantially as shown and described.
