Definitions

  • Mitchell Attorney-lmi1'ie & Smiley ABSTRACT A foldable bed, particularly camping bed, having a mattress attached to two foldable frame portions connected to each other by a link member having a length Substantially equal to double the thickness of the mattress such that the folded mattress is Supported and protected between the spaced frame portions in the folded state of the bed.
  • This invention relates to a foldable bed, particularly a camping bed, characterized by a simple construction without welded joints and by an exceptionally favorable foldability without the necessity to remove the mattress from the frame when folding the bed.
  • the bed according to this invention comprises a fore and rear rigid portion of the frame, each of said frame portions being pivotably connected to a link member and each of said frame portions having two U-shaped legs swingable into the plane of the frame portion round a joint mounted in the plane of the frame portion.
  • FIG. 1 is a side view of the folded bed
  • FIG. 2 is a top view of a portion of the frame
  • FIG. 3 is a section along line IIIIII in FIG. 2 and FIG. 4 is a section along line IVIV in FIG. 1.
  • the illustrated bed has a fore frame portion 1 and a rear frame portion 2 constituted each by a U-shaped metal tube.
  • the ends of frame portions 1 and 2 are each pivotably connected to a link member or into intermediate member 3.
  • the length of this link member 3 substantially corresponds to double the thickness of a mattress 4 of the bed so that the folded mattress which always remains attached to the frame portions may be accommodated between the folded frame portions 1 and 2 as illustrated in FIG. 1.
  • the outer ends of frame portions II and 2 are maintained in the folded position as illustrated by a strap 5 having a hook 6, whereby the mattress is clamped between the frame portions by slight pressure.
  • Each of the frame portions 1 and 2 has two legs 7 and 8, the legs of the frame portion 1 being illustrated in a position slightly lifted from the plane of frame portion 1. In the completely folded state of the bed the legs are folded into the plane of the frame portions 1 and 2.
  • the legs 7 and 8 consist of a U-shaped tube 9 having its ends flattened as shown in FIG. 2 and the flattened ends being laterally offset from the axis of tube 9 such that the flattened end portions 10 directly contact the inner side of the tubes of frame portions 1 and 2, while the side portions of the tubes 9 of legs 7 and 8 may be folded into the plane of the frame portions with some clearance between the side portions of the legs and the tubes of frame portions 1 and 2.
  • the flattened ends of strutting 13 have a cutout 15 of semicircular shape with a tooth or point 16 projecting from its center. Each cutout 15 contacts the inner side of the tube of leg 7 while the point 16 engages an aperture 17 of the leg tube. In this way a reliable connection of the strutting 13 to the side portions of the legs is obtained without welding.
  • the side portions of the legs are elastically spread out prior to their assemblage with the frame portions, in order to insert the struttings of which the points 16 enter into the apertures 17 when the leg reassumes its original form by its own elasticity.
  • the summit 14 of the strutting may then be riveted to the yoke of the leg.
  • the U-shaped frame 19 of a headrest is pivotably mounted on the frame portion 1.
  • a supporting bracket 20 is pivotably attached to the headrest, bracket 20 being adapted to engage the toothing 21 of a rack 22.
  • the racks 22 provided on each side of the frame portion 1 and of which the one is shown in FIG. 4, are stamped parts riveted to the outer side of thc profile of the fore frame portion 1 and extending inwardly above the profile portion. Therefore, these racks 22 cannot hinder swinging of the leg 8 of the fore frame portion 1 into the plane of this frame portion 1, as may be seen from FIG. 4.
  • the hook 6 For opening the bed the hook 6 is disengaged, whereafter the frame portions 1 and 2 may be swung into a stretched position round the joints interconnecting them with the link portion 3.
  • the legs 7 and 8 if not previously swung out into their position for use, may now be swung out, whereby their end positions are determined by abutment against the brackets 12.
  • the bed is ready for use.
  • For folding the bed the above operations are executed in reversed order.
  • a foldable bed having a mattress attached to a fore and rear rigid U-shaped frame portion, each of said frame portions being pivotably connected to link members having a length substantially equal to twice the thickness of the mattress and each of said frame portions having two U-shaped legs reinforced by a strutting and swingable into the plane of the frame portion round a joint mounted in the plane of the frame portion, said legs being mounted on the inner side of said frame portions thereby stabilizing the frame portions by their strutting.
  • a bed according to claim I having tubular legs with flattened ends, a bolt in each of said joints passing through a flattened end of one of said legs, said bolts being anchored at each end of the flattened ends in the tube of the frame portion and in a bracket respectively fixed to the frame portion, said brackets forming stops determining the one end position of said legs.
  • a foldable bed having a mattress attached to a fore and rear portion of the frame, said frame portions being pivotably interconnected by link members and each of said frame portions having two U-shaped legs swingable into the plane of the frame portion round a joint mounted in the plane of the frame portion, said legs having a V-shaped strutting of which the summit is connected to the yoke of the leg and of which the ends are fitted into the side portions of a leg.
  • each leg of the strutting is flattened and has a point engaging an aperture of the side portion of a leg.
  • a foldable bed comprising a frame having a fore and a rear U-shaped frame portion of tubular material, the free ends of said U-shaped frame portions being pivotably intercon nected by a pair of link members, a mattress attached to and supported on said frame, the length of said link members being substantially equal to twice the thickness of said mattress such that the folded mattress may be accommodated between said fore and rear frame portion folded upon each other, pairs of U-shaped legs having each a yoke portion and side portions pivotably connected with the free ends of their side portions to the inner sides of said frame portions such that such legs may be swung into the plane of the frame portions, and strutting means in the plane of the legs and interconnecting the side portions of said legs thereby reinforcing such legs, and the legs strutting said frame portions against bending inwardly when the bed is loaded.
