Be it known that I, RICHARD LAVERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the con n ty of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usev ful Improvements in Hawse and Deck Pipe Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for closing the hawse and deck pipes of vessels when the cable is passed through the same.
The invention consists in constructing the hawse or deck pipe with a flange provided with lugs to which are hinged flaps or covers, the covers being formed on their inner edges with openings to conformto the section of the cable-link, the under side ofthe covers being fitted with rubber that projects out beyond the inner edge of the same, so as to form a watertightjoint between them, as well as between the flange and covers. rIhe covers are held down when the pipe is closed by means of screw-bolts pivoted to lugs cast on the under side of the flange of the pipe.

A represents a hawse or deck pipe; B,`the flange, provided at each end with lugs O C and on each side with lugs D D, projecting down below the flange B. (See Fig. 2.)
E E are covers, provided on one side with lugs or ears'F F, corresponding with the lugs C C on the flange B.
-G G are fiat links connected at one end to the ears F and at the other ends tothe lugs C, the whole forming a set of flexible hinges, which, when the covers are forced down, are capable of exerting a great pressure,(acting in the forni of knuckle-j oints, on the principle of Fig. 9 is a view of' the Stanhop press/U by means of which the cable-link is firmly clasped by the elastic packing, and leakage ot' water into the vessel is completely stopped. rIhe hinges are adjusted by means of set-screws g g, bearing against the outer connectingpins that work in the slots c formed in the lugs C.
The under side of each cover E is provided with a projection, E', having alip, e, all round. The object of this projection and lip is to hold in position a tlat piece of rubber, II, that has a hole cut in it the shape ofthe projection E', and is sprung onto it under the lip e. The two inner edges of the covers E E and the edges of the rubber that come together are cut out to conform to the section of the cable passed through the hawse or deck pipe, as shown, so that when closed the two edges of the rubber will press hard against each other and against the link that is between them, and no water will be able to pass through the joint.
Should the rubber become worn, the covers can be pushed toward the center by means of the set-screws gg, thereby bringing the rubber again into close contact. v
To hold the covers tightly down, I employ screw-bolts J, pivoted at their lower ends to the lugs D D, and passing up through lugs or ears K K on the sides of the covers E E. Each bolt J is provided with a nut, L, provided with a handle, Z, so that when the covers are closed, as in Figs. l and 2, the nuts 'L are screwed down tight, thereby compressing the rubber H between the covers and the flangeB and making a perfectly watertightjoint.
The dottedlines in Fig. l show the position of the covers when open.
When the covers are to stand in a vertical position, I cast onto the flange B a projection, B', (see Figs. l and 6,) which acts as a rest or support to the covers when they are closed, and before they are secured by the bolts and nuts J L.
It will be seen that by the above arrangement a cover or stopper for hawse and deck pipes is produced that will be perfectly Water-tight, and yet allow the cable to remain in the pipe, thereby dispensing with the necessity of having the cable unbent before the pipe can be stopped.
What I claim as my invention isl. ln combination with ahawse or deck pipe,

a cover made in halves, provided with an elastic packing material,wl1ereby a link of a chairr cable passed through the pipe and placed between the meeting edges of the cover will be firmly gripped by the packing across its center, a portion of the meeting edges of the said packing having been molded to it the style of chain used, whetherstud or open link, the meeting edges of the aforesaid packing, when in operation, to press against each other and to embrace Vthe central cross-section of the aforesaid link, as and foi.` the purpose set forth and specified.
2. In combination with a hawse or deck pipe provided with a cover made in halves, sets of doublejointed flexible hinges connecting the aforesaid half-'covers to the hawse or deck pipe, whereby the elastic packing material secured to the said half-covers will, with lthe covers, be forced together and thejoint at the meet ing edges of said half-covers be made watertight, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a hawse or deck pipe provided with a cover made in halves, sets of double-jointed flexible hinges connecting the aforesaid half-covers to hawse or deck pipe, whereby the elastic packing material secured to the said half-covers will, with thescovers, be forced together and made to firmly grip a chain-cable link across its center when passed through said pipe and covers, the said covers being held down by suitable bolts and nuts,

5. In combination with a hawse or deck pipe and cover made in halves, to which is secured elastic packing material, sets of flexible double-jointed hinges capable of adjustment so as to compensate for the wear of said packing, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
6. A llawse or deck pipe, A, provided with flange B and lugs C, in combination with the covers E, provided with ears F and elastic packing H, links G, and set-screws g g, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
7. In combi-nation with a hawse or deck pipe, a cover, E, provided on its under side with a projection, E', and lip e, for retaining an elastic packing, H, in position, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. In combination with the ange of a hawse-pipe, the projection B', for supporting the covers when closed but not fastened, substantially as shown and described.
