SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,053, dated March 29, 1887.

To aZZ whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NownLL F. SAwrER, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Bradford, in the couutyot' Essex and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following, taken in connection wit-h the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
Figure l represents a longitudinal section of the invention, and Fig. 2 represents a crosssection on the line A B, shown in Fig. l.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
The invention is equally well adapted for use as a steam generator or boiler, steam-heating or hot-water circulating` device, and it is carried out as follows:
als the hollow water-front, made of cast-iron and provided with fuel-feed opening b and door b', and ash-pit opening c, having hinged door c, as shown in Fig. l. From the back of the hollow waterfront a extends backward the hollow water-compartments a a, which form the sides of the fire-boX, and such compartments have their tops a a made taperingthat is, rising from the rear of the iirebox toward the hollow waterfront a, as shown, so as to cause a constant circulation of the water in said chambers or compartments from thelower to the upper portion ofthe hollow water-front c,with which they are in open and free communication, as shown.

Vithin the hollow water-front a are made a pair of division-walls, a8 ai, outside ofthe water-compartments a a', as shown in Fig. 2, said walls a3 a3 terminating at some distance from the top and bottom ot' the waterfront a, as shown.
a" a* are the steam-pipes leading from the upper portion ofthe hollow water-front a, and a5 a represent, respectively, the feed-water pipe and blowotf pipe connected to the lower portion of the hollow water-front, as shown.
By the construction and arrangement ofthe circulating U-shaped pipes g g g, secured to the rear ot' thehollow water-front a, as shown, said pipes are made free to expand or contract in any direction without in any manner causing a strain on the water-front a, and thus all liability of breakage or explosion ot' the boiler is prevented. 7L is the bricl-:-work,within which the water-front and circulating-pipes are inclosed, and i represents the chimney orsmokestack, having openings k l leading to it from the combustion-chamber, such openings being provided with the respective dampers 7c Z, as shown in Fig. 1. At some distance above the upper inclined legs of the circulating-pipes g g g is located the inclined deiecting plate or cover m, (shown in Fig. 1,) which plate is arranged parallel, or nearly so, to the upper inclined portions of the said circulating-pi pes g g g, as shown in Fig. l. Said cover m is preferably supported on beams, rods, or stays m m', and covered on top by means of asbestus or bricks m", as shown in Fig. l. rlhe object of such inclined plate or cover m is to cause the heat from the fire-box to rise to the highest portion of the combustion-chamber, and thereby to cause a free combustion of the gaseous products of the fuel and to bring the latter in close and intimate Contact with the circulatingpipes g g g, and thus to obtain the best results i'orheating the water and circulating the same within the various parts of the boiler.
Below the horizontal legs of the circulating- IOO pipes g g g, I arrangea division-plate, n, preferably supported on beams, stays, or braces n n', as shown in Fig. 1, said plate being extended to the rear close up to the chimney ,with a space `left between its forward end and the rear of thelower portion of t-he water-front a, as shown in Fig. 1, thus forming flues op, leading from the combustion-chamber to the chimney i, as shown in Fig. 1. The lower horizontal legs of the circulating-pipes g g g, as is seen in Fig. l, are thus arranged and located within the iiue or channel o, causing the products of the tirepot and combustionchamber to pass around and between said pipes on their way to the chimney z', asshown by arrowsin Fig. 1,thus obtaining the best results for heating and circulating the water in said pipes g g gto and from the hollow water-front a.
a7 a7 are man-holes, as usual, in the forward part of the hollow water-front a, and ages are covers for the same, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described the construction, operation, and arrangement of my invent-ion, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- 1. In a steam-generator, the hollow water front a, having the rearwardlyprojecting hollow Water-chambers a a', adapted to form the sides of the re-box, and having the inclined tops a a", for the purpose of causing a proper Vcirculation of the water within said chambers a a', as set forth.
2. In a steam-generator, the hollow waterfront a, having the vertical division-walls c3 ai, as described, combined with the hollow waterohambers a ce', and U -shaped circulating-pipes g g g, connected to the rear of the water-front a, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a steam-generator, the hollow waterfront a and the U-shaped circulatingpipes g g g, connected to the rear of said hollow waterfront, in combination with the re-boX arranged between the upper and lower legs of said U-shaped circulating-pipes g g g, as set forth.
4. In a steamgenerator7 the hollow waterfront a and the U-shaped circulating-pipes g gg,connected to it,as deseribed,in combination with the plates f n and flue o, in which the lower legs ofthe circulating-pipes g g`g are contained, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a steam-generator, the hollow waterfront a and the Ushaped circulating-pipes g g g, as described, in combination with the inclincd cover m, for conducting the products of the re to the highest portion of said circulating-pipes, and the 1eturnilue o,for heating the lower portions of said pipes g g g, as set forth.
