UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GABRIELE ZACCONE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,340, dated March 15, 1887.
Application filed January 30, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GABRIELE ZAoCoNE, of Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to the class of tables having adjustable tops; and it consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a table provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the top and the immediate support thereof, illustrating the lateral sliding movement of the top upon said support.
A is a center post or standard of the table, and B is the top. The post A is provided with a central recess, a, open at the top and constructed to admit and guide a vertically-sliding notched bar, D, and also constructed to aHord room for a spring-pawl, E, arranged to automatically engage the notchesd of said bar D. The top B of the table is immediately supported by the bar D, and is therefore vertically adjustable by means of said bar and the pawl E, as described. The bar Dis in the present case connected with the table-top by means of a block, C, constructed to slide in parallel guides B', attached to the under surface of the said top B, the bar being, for the purpose of suitably rigid attachment, provided with a ange, d, which is screwed to the under surface of said block C. The guides B are provided with grooves b, and the block C is constructed with corresponding flanges, c, Which enter saidgrooves b. By means of the said block C andthe guide-bars B the top B of the table may be slid upon the block C to one side or the other, as indicated in Fig. 2. The top B has therefore a double adjustment, or, in other words, it may be raised to any desen'al No. 119,189. (No model.)
sired height, and also set off at one side to any distance 'allowable by the breadth of its base. This construction will be found practically convenient and useful in many uses of the table-as, for example, at the bedside of the Sick.
An improved feature of construction in the spring-pawl E and of the recess a in the post for its accommodation, whereby the pawl may be readily inserted and retained Within said recess, is herein shown. This feature of the invention consists in a bent spring, E, having its lower end upturned, as shown, and in the lateral enlargement of the recess a at a', to afford room for the upper end of the said spring, and the further lateralenlargement of said recess at a2, to afford room for the upwardlybent lower end of said spring, and a shoulder against which said lower upturned end may bear. The spring-pawl E isretracted from the notches d in the bar D by means of a pin, e, Whichpasses through the said post, and is screwed or otherwise fastened to said spring, as shown.
I claim as my invention vThe combination, with the post A, provided with a recess,-c, having lateral enlargements a. and a, and a table-top provided with a notched bar, D, constructed to enter the recess a', of the spring-pawl E, located Within the enlargement a', and consisting of a metal strip having its upper end engaged with the notches of the bar D, and its lower end upturned and engaged with the shoulder formed by the enlargement a?, and a pin, e, attached to the pawl and extended through the post A, said pin being adapted to release the pawl from engagement with the notched bar, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GABRIELE ZACCONE.
