Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL DOORN, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOOMS.
y Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,9 1S, dated July 22, 1862.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it kno-wn that I, SAMUEL BOORN, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of' Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Cushion-Case to be applied to a Shuttle-Box of a Loom for Weaving; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the fol lowing specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 denotes a side elevation, Fig. 2 a rear end view, Fig. 3 a bottom view, and Eig. 4 a horizontal section, of it as provided with a cushion formed of layers of leather, caoutchouc, and curled horse-hair.
The nature of my invention consists iu an improved metallic case for an elastic cushion to be employed upon the shut-tlebox or" a loom, in order to prevent violent concussions and injury to the picker or picker-statt'.
In the drawings, A denotes the body ofthe said case, within which I form a socket or chamber, B, for reception of an elastic eu'shion, E.` The said case I form with a wide notch or recess, b, arranged in it, as shown in the drawings, the same being for the purpose not only ot' allowing the said cushion to expand,
laterally, but of preventing injury to the neck of the picker, such as would result by the said p neck repeatedly striking against the edge of the metallic case, as it would do were there no such notch and the cushion should settle within the case. Furthermore, through the rear part of the case I make two rectangular or other proper shaped slots, c c', for reception, respectvely, ofthe two end portions of a band or strap, j'pwhich is employed to secure together and in place the component parts of the cushion. The elastic material or cushion, having been inserted in the said socket B, should be conned therein by means of the said band, which lfor such purpose should be loopedon the cushion and be drawn tightly through such slots, and may be wedged or fastened therein.
(l is a cylindrical hole carried longitudinally through the said case, such hole being for the reception of the race-rod of the picker. The said case, when placed upon such rod, is to be confined thereto by means of a setscrew, D, the same being as shown in Fig. 2.V
I would remark that I do not limit my in vention to the precise form of picker-case as represented in the accompanying drawings, as I intend to vary the same as circumstances may require, while I do-not change its character or the nature of my improvement. Furthermore, I would remark that the width of the mouth or entrance of the notch b should be somewhat greater than that of the neck or part of the picker which is to enter the notch, and such notch should be so arranged in the side of the cushion-case that when the said case is in place on the loom the picker or the pickerstaff, as the case may be, when striking t-he cushion may enter the notch without comingl in contact with either of the sides or bottom thereof.
I do not claim asiinple box or cushion-case; but
Vhat I do claim is- 1. My improved loom-picker cushion-case as made with a notch or recess,b, arranged with reference to its cushion and for reception of the picker or picker-staff, in manner and for the purpose substantially as specified.
`2. The cushioncase as provided or made with the loop-slots extending through its bottom or rear part and out of its cushion-chamber, i n manner and for the pu rpose as described.
SAMUEL BOORN. Vitnesses: Y C. F. NoURsE,
A. J. STACKPOLE.
